Police personnel were forced to use lathis on aspiring Home Guards at a recruitment camp at Goshamahal police stadium on Monday, when more than 20,000 job-seekers turned up for the 300 vacant posts.
The situation began to deteriorate when the youth, having waited for more than 3 hours for their turn to file their applications, began to push and jostle each other.
The jostling soon turned into arguments, and the situation seemed to be getting out of hand, when higher officials gave the nod for the use of mild force.
A lathicharge brought the situation under control soon, and the aspirant Home Guards were soon made to form queues. Minor injuries to some of the aspirants were reported.
About 500 tokens were then handed over to the hopefuls, while the rest of the aspirants told to come back on Tuesday.
The disappointed aspirants left the stadium, vowing to come back and try their luck of making a future in the police force.
