Former minister Mandari Buddha Prasad, on Tuesday, called off his 3-day hunger strike that he undertook demanding the release of water for the Krishna Delta.
The decision to call off the strike was taken after Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy spoke to Buddha Prasad over telephone and assured him that he would send Irrigation minister Sudarshan Reddy to the Krishna Delta to study the need for water there.
Another former minister. Gade Venkat Reddy, offered him lime juice to break his fast.
Talking to repoters later, Buddha Prasad claimed that his fast was not aimed at drawing political mileage. He said that several leaders were opposed to the demand for the release of water to Krishna Delta, and that he had undertaken the strike to highlight the plight of farmers.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress MLAs P Nani, Malladi Vishnu and Jogi Ramesh and other leaders announced that they would launch another hunger strike if the state government fails to fulfill its commitment for the release of water for the Krishna Delta region. (INN)
