Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader K Taraka Rama Rao on Wednesday demanded that AICC President Sonia Gandhi tender an unconditional apology to the people of Telangana for the suicides committed by several students and youth seeking statehood for the region.
Speaking to media persons here, KTR held Sonia Gandhi responsible for the nearly 1,200 suicides that occurred in the region due to the delay by the Congress party in taking the decision to grant statehood for Telangana.
He alleged that the Congress deliberately dragged the statehood issue and timed its decision on granting statehood to gain maximum political mileage.
He said that the Congress took a favourable decision on Telangana not to fulfill the wishes of the people but to win maximum seats in the region.
KTR alleged that the delay by the Congress in granting statehood was the primary reason that drove several youth and students to suicide. He said that the Congress party, especially Sonia Gandhi, should apologise to the people for the same.
The TRS leader also demanded a change in the design of the Polavaram Project to protect the interest of Telangana farmers. Further, he wanted cancellation of the ordinance giving a few mandals of Khammam district to Seemandhra.
He said that Sonia Gandhi herself should make these announcements during her campaign in the Telangana region. (INN)
