Prakasam District Collector Kantilal Dande on Sunday revealed that 108 rescue centres to help people of the 75 villages likely to be affected by cyclonic storm 'Jal' have been set up.
Speaking to media persons, Dande stated that officials have been put on high alert following the warnings of heavy rains issued by the Meteorological Department.
He urged the people and officials to be alert all the time in view of the expected heavy rains due to the cyclone.
Officials have already evacuated 120 families from Pakuduru village, Tangutur mandal, to rescue centres, as a precautionary measure.
Unconfirmed reports state that as many as 68 lakes in district are overflowing due to the incessant rains which have been lashing the region. According to sources, the officials are making efforts to ensure that the overflowing water from these lakes does not inundate residential areas.
Meanwhile, traffic on the highways has come to a standstill as many stretches of the roads have been flooded by the overflowing water, according to sources.
