Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said that it was a historic day for the state today as the irrigation department had succeeded in the Herculean task of shifting the Singur waters of the Godavari river from 187 km away to Siddipet.
Releasing the waters into the left canal of the Tapaspally reservoir in Siddipet, the minister expressed happiness that his government had finally achieved its goal of getting irrigation waters to 20 villages in Siddipet and Kondapaka mandals.
"Since Siddipet is located at a greater height than other localities, shifting waters was indeed a problem, but we have achieved it," he said. "With this, we can irrigate about 40,000 acres and fill 31 lakes and reservoirs in the area," he claimed.
Keeping the height in view the state government had taken a decision to construct the Mallanna Sagar project, he said.
It was also decided to lift 8.50 TMC waters from the Devadula project, he said, adding that the TRS government had increased the allocation to 60 TMC as against the 38.5 TMC allotted by the previous government. He also said that a barrage would be constructed at Tupakulagudem, and that the government was spending Rs 1,700 crores to complete the Devadula project.
The minister also took a perfunctory jibe at the Congress for misguiding the courts by filing wrong cases against the projects. The works on the projects would however still not be stalled, and the official machinery was on the job of completing them, he said. The opposition parties were turning out to be a hindrance and a stumbling block to the development works, and the farmers and other people should be cautious of the nefarious designs of those parties which did not want the completion of the projects, he warned.
