The Keesara police arrested the chairman of Hasvitha Institute of Engineering & Technology (HIET) Vasanth Tarun Kumar in connection with a major fee reimbursement scam.
On June 20 this year, a student named Anitha from Jajireddygudem Loyapally, a village in the Nalgonda district, lodged a complaint with the Keesara police stating that she was scammed by HIET. She stated that she was admitted to HIET through online counselling for M. Tech. course (2013-15). When she went to pay the first semester examination fees, they demanded a separate "development fees".
The Keesara police registered a case, Cr. No. 184/2016, under the IPC and the SC/ST (POA) Act, and investigated the case under the supervision of ACP Syed Rafeeq, Alwal Division.
The police said that student, who belonged to the ST category, had to apply for a post-matric scholarship and a fee reimbursement with the District Tribal Welfare Officer (DTWO) of Ranga Reddy through the college. The Tribal Welfare Department, after scrutinizing the document, would directly send the fee-reimbursement amount to the college's account, and the post-matric scholarship amount to the account of the applicant towards mess charges.
Anitha had given her original caste and income certificates to the college management, but it allegedly claimed an additional "fee reimbursement" charge. Also, when the complainant went to pay the fee for the first semester examination, the college management refused to receive it unless she paid the development fee of Rs. 5,500. She sought more time with the management citing lack of additional funds, which they rejected. This lead her to forgo her examination.
Later, the management faked Anita's first year marks memo, affidavit, Aadhar card and other documents which were not originally furnished by her. These documents were then uploaded to the Tribal Welfare Department's administrative website for the sanction of fee-reimbursement.
Upon suspicion, the student questioned the management. The DTWO supposedly didn't know about the scam.
The police promised to take immediate action against the managment and help compensate the victims of the scam.
