Tension prevailed in Sardar Patel Nagar in Kukatpally on Monday, when officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with the help of Revenue and Police departments, were conducting a drive to remove encroachments.
As part of the drive, the GHMC officials demolished several encroachments in the area. The locals resisted the demolitions, and had a heated argument with officials of the GHMC and the police.
The people in the area demanded that they be given an alternative place for shelter.
Earlier, GHMC officials identified 25 encroachments, including residential houses, commercial complexes and the buildings which violated rules and regulations, and served notices on them.
GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu said the drive to remove encroachments is being taken up periodically to ensure that road margins and footpaths are kept free of obstructions.
"Unless we do it regularly, encroachers will not feel the heat," observed a senior official.
Police security was further enhanced after the Kukatpally incident. (INN)
