The disciplinary committee of the Telangana Congress today asked party leader Rashid Khan to submit his explanation over his controversial signature campaign urging the State government to allow Muslims to offer namaz at the historic Charminar beside the Bhagyalakshmi temple.
It gave five days for the leader to submit his explanation.
The committee issued the instructions after giving a personal hearing to Rashid Khan.
Khan told the committee members that he was not against the continuous poojas at the temple, and that he was carrying out his signature campaign urging the State and union governments to allow Muslims to offer namaz on the old mosque located atop the Charminar.
He said that he had met union minister G Kishan Reddy on the issue, claiming that namaz used to be performed in the mosque in the past.
The minister said that several people had committed suicides by jumping from atop the monument in the past, and so asked him to seek the permission of the State government as it involved a law and order issue, Khan said.
He added that he did not raise a new issue, and that he had been fighting for this issue for a year now.
He also said that he would submit his explanation in five days to the disciplinary committee.
