Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi met the Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence, to discuss the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls. He was invited to the capital by the Congress, after he announced the PRP's decision to contest the RS elections.
According to the actor-turned-politician who spoke to the media after the meeting, he was asked by Sonia Gandhi to back out of the Rajya Sabha polls. When quizzed about a possible PRP-Congress merger, Chiranjeevi stressed categorically that the question of a merger does not arise, and that the talks were about reaching an understanding about the RS polls.
The decision to hold talks with the PRP is important to the Congress in the wake of new developments in AP's politics, wherein loyalties are being split between Jagan and the rest of the party. Jagan is seen as becoming openly defiant of the party high command, as his decision to go ahead with his Odarpu yatra (prior to incidents on Friday, including his arrest) demonstrates.
