The Telangana government on Tuesday issued a notification declaring that the Telangana Compulsory Teaching And Learning Of Telugu In Schools Act, 2018, was now in force in the state.
According G O Ms No 12, issued by the Department of School Education, the appointed date for the Act coming into force is April 2, 2018.
It may be recalled that the Telangana Assembly passed the Act on March 24 this year during the budget session of the legislature making teaching and learning of Telugu compulsory in all schools from the 2018-19 academic year. The Act mandates that all schools in the state begin teaching Telugu "in a phased manner" as a subject from classes 1 to 10.
The Act is also applicable to schools following the ICSE, CBSE, IB and Cambridge boards' syllabi.
