Telugu Desam Party general secretary M A Sharief was today elected Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council unopposed.
In-charge chairman Reddy Subramanyam announced the election of Sharief as the next Chairman of the Council.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu then congratulated Sharief and escorted him to his seat. Appreciating Sharief's services, Naidu expressed hope that the new Chairman would conduct the Council in a proper manner. He also said that his party had continuously kept its promise of giving important posts to Muslims.
Naidu also claimed that 78.5% of the people in Andhra Pradesh were happy with the TDP government.
Speaking on the occasion, Sharief said that he would uphold the dignity of the Upper House and serve the people.
Born in Narsapuram of West Godavari district on January 1, 1955, Sharief earned a B Com degree from the local Y N College, and an M Com and an LLB from Bhopal. He joined the TDP when it was floated by party founder N T Rama Rao, and has been in the party till date holding various capacities. He had also served as the party Whip in the Council.
