Naidu In Aurangabad Jail

Maharashtra police use force to shift reluctant legislators, injure 6, and seize mobile phones
Hyderabad | 20th July 2010
Maharashtra police on Tuesday shifted former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu to a jail in Aurangabad, but not before using canes on his supporters and 6 TDP legislators, leaving them injured.

The TDP team, which has been under detention by the Maharashtra police, was shifted from the Dharmabad ITI, following the extension of their judicial remand till July 26.

According to reports, TDP MLA G Govardhan suffered an injury on his leg, while 5 other legislators were also said to have received lathi blows during the scuffle between the police and Naidu's supporters who had gheraoed the Dharmabad ITI on getting to know of plans to shift the detainees.

Late on Monday night, Naidu was informed by the authorities of their intent to shift him and his team from the ITI.

He was also informed that they would be leaving early on Tuesday morning on account of apprehension that plans by some political outfits in Maharashtra to stage protests against the TDP leader and his team.

According to information received, Naidu got up later than usual and then insisted on his breakfast. The TDP leader then entered into an argument about his mode of transportation, effectively delaying the start of their journey till 10am.

Meanwhile, the TDP supporters started to protest, leaving the police bewildered. The police then were told by Naidu that he was reluctant to leave Dharmabad.

This led to the police forcing Naidu and his team members into the waiting vehicles, leading to the jostling between the police and the team members.

Meanwhile, the legislators used their mobile phones to inform the media about the turn of events. Seeing this, the police seized any mobile phone they could spot in the hands of the legislators.

After injuring the legislators and forcing Naidu into the waiting vehicles, the convoy left for Aurangabad at around 10:30 am.

According to reports coming in, the police threw away some personal belongings of the legislators under detention. The seized mobile phones have not been returned to the legislators.

Naidu's personal security guards have been shifted to an undisclosed location.

Meanwhile, security in and around Aurangabad has been tightened, with additional police personnel being deployed there.

According to information, police have intensified their presence along the route from Dharmabad to Aurangabad, anticipating obstructions by supporters or opponents of the TDP chief.
