Dr Namrata of Srushti Fertility Centre, Secunderabad, confessed to collecting huge sums ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 30 lakh from childless couples in the name of surrogacy when she actually gave them the newborns of other couples.
The scam unearthed recently created a sensation across the country.
In her confession before the investigating officer, Dr Namrata, who runs the place, said that she had started her fertility centre in Vijayawada in 1998 and later expanded to Secunderabad in 2007. According to her statement, she purchased children through agents, promising money to pregnant women who came to the hospital. She also admitted to deceiving childless couples by making them believe they would have children through the surrogacy method while actually giving them others' children.
Dr Namrata also acknowledged that multiple cases had been registered against her previously - four in Maharanipeta, two in Visakhapatnam, one in Kothapet and five in Gopalapuram.
She also disclosed that her sons Sanjay and Santoshi played key roles in purchasing children from poor pregnant women after delivery, and that another son Jayant Krishna, a lawyer, had extended full cooperation in the scam.
She said that they operated the surrogacy scam with the support of doctors in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Secunderabad.
