Unmindful of pressure from local leaders to contest at least 10 seats of the 150 GHMC seats for which elections will be held on February 2, YSR Congress Party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy today decided to stay away from the fray.
The YCRCP was withdrawing from the civic body poll fray as its focus was on strengthening itself in the GHMC limits first, said its Telangana unit chief Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
"We will focus on strengthening the Party in all the wards first - develop it through the rank and file at the grassroots level. We want to become a major political Party in Telangana in the future', Reddy said.
According to reliable sources, Jagan apparently curtly refused to contest. Though the Party originally toyed with the idea of fielding candidates, the Warangal bypoll result and its poor strength in the twin cities forced it to abstain.
The YCRCP appears to be keeping out also to extend indirect support to the TRS and thus opposing its rival the Telugu Desam Party, which is competing aggressively in an alliance with the BJP.
