Veteran actress-director G Vijaya Nirmala passed away on Thursday after a prolonged ailment.
The actress was admitted to Continental Hospitals, Gachibowli, where she breathed her last.
She was 73.
Nirmala began her career as a child artiste in Tamil, and later entered the Telugu film industry where she played many roles. She acted in about 200 films overall in the Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam film industries.
She also directed 44 movies in Telugu, and also produced a few.
In 2002, she entered the Guinness Book Of World Records as the female director to direct the most movies.
In 2008, she received the prestigious Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for her contribution to Telugu cinema.
Her senior Savitri and she are credited as the only female directors to have directed the legendary Sivaji Ganesan.
Vijaya Nirmala was born in Tamil Nadu. Her father worked as a sound engineer in a film production company. She made her debut at the age of seven as a child artiste with a Tamil movie Machcha Rekhai (1950). In 1964, she starred opposite Prem Nazir and rose to stardom with the Malayalam hit Bhargavi Nilayam. She debuted in the Telugu industry with the film Rangula Ratnam in 1966, where her lead co-star was Chandra Mohan.
She was married early (at age 19) to a Krishna Murthy, with who she has a son Naresh Vijaya Krishna, a popular charactor actor now and once a popular comedy hero. However, she later divorced Murthy and married then Telugu film star Ghattamaneni Krishna, who she met in the shooting of 1967's Sakshi and with whom she acted in 47 movies in her career.
Ramesh Babu and Mahesh Babu, born of Krishna's first marriage, are Nirmala's step sons.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao paid floral tributes to Nirmala at Krishna's residence at Nanakramguda.
The Chief Minister, who conveyed his deep sympathies to the bereaved family members, also consoled Krishna and other relatives of the late actress on the occasion. He was accompanied by ministers Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Errabelli Dayakar Rao, V Srinivas Goud and others.
The final rites of Nirmala will be performed on June 28, according to information.
