Telangana Raises Retirement Age Of Government Doctors

The Telangana Assembly passed a Bill enhancing the retirement age for faculty members in government medical and dental colleges from 58 to 65 years.
Hyderabad | 18th July 2019
The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday carried out an amendment to the Telangana Public Employment (Regulation of Age of Superannuation) Act enhancing the retirement age for faculty members in government medical colleges and government dental colleges, including semi-autonomous and autonomous medical colleges, from 58 to 65 years.

Introducing a Bill to this effect, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao said that the government had taken the decision to increase the retirement age after observing that several other States were implementing the same.

He also said that the main reason behind increasing the retirement age was to meet the shortage of teaching faculty in government-run medical colleges.

He said that the decision was motivated by the fact that the recruitment of teachers for medical colleges would take a lot of time that would eventually affect the students.

The Chief Minister said that the Medical Council of India had already made it clear that teaching faculty could work up to the age of 70.

He said that the government had brought about an ordinance increasing the age limit to meet the demand in view of the establishment of four new government medical colleges, and urged the House to approve the Bill unanimously.

"Increasing the retirement age for professors, associate professors and assistant professors will not have any impact on recruitments as there is a huge demand for medical faculty. We will fill the vacant posts on a priority," he promised addressing a potential concern, and emphasized that the government was compelled to increase the retirement age only due to the severe shortage of faculty members in various medical colleges despite efforts to recruit. He said that many students were being forced to opt for medical colleges outside the State as the existing medical colleges in the State did not have sufficient faculty members, even leading to the closure of some colleges.

The Telangana Legislative Council is also scheduled to meet on July 19 to endorse the Bill.
