The Election Commission of India has decided to conduct the Assembly elections in Telangana along with those in four other states - Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Mizoram.
Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat held a key meeting in Delhi today with members Umesh Sinha, Sunil Arora and Ashok Lavas, and discussed with them the conducting of the elections in the five states. The EC stated that its officials would visit Telangana within 10 days and then go through the final exercise on deciding the election dates. It is learnt that the election schedule will then be released for the five states, sometime in the second week of October.
The EC expressed its satisfaction over the arrangements being made in Telangana for conducting the elections. The Sinha committee informed the EC that poll arrangements are almost complete in Telangana and that a favourable atmosphere prevailed in the state, and Rawat is understood to have based his decision on that.
