Telangana is gearing up for another round of the state-wide Covid-19 vaccination drive, this time for the elderly.
The drive, which comes after the one organised for healthcare workers and frontline workers, will reportedly be launched on March 1. While people above 60 years of age will be treated as the first priority group this time, those aged between 45 and 59 years with co-morbidities will also be vaccinated in the program.
Beneficiaries can register online for the drive, or by visiting a vaccination centre close to them. However, only online registrations will be allowed for the next few days, the officials of the health department stated. All those going to the centres to get inoculated must carry their Aadhar cards and voter ID cards with them.
Speaking on the matter, Telangana's Director of Public Health Dr G Srinivasa Rao reassured the two target demographics that they could take the vaccine without any fears about its side effects, or misgivings about its efficacy. He also advised the people to get the second injection within 28 to 42 days of the first.
Talking about the cost of the vaccination, Rao said, "The vaccine will be administered free of cost at the government health centres. But those opting to get inoculated at private health facilities will have to pay for the same. The cost of one dose is Rs 150, and private hospitals are permitted to charge a maximum of Rs 100 as service charge. They may also choose to waive the extra charge entirely, or charge less than Rs 100."
The drive will be launched in 93 vaccination centres from March 1. The number of centres will then be increased to over 1,000 within a week.
So far, about 4 lakh health workers in Telangana have been immunised with the Covaxin vaccine.
