Former PCC president D Srinivas on Friday said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi was not against the people of Seemandhra.
Addressing the first victory rally at Bodhan in Nizambad district, Srinivas said that Sonia Gandhi took a decision in favour of Telangana as the statehood demand was pending for the last several decades.
He said, "The Congress party and its leadership will take all measures for the fast development of the Seemandhra region."
He asked the Seemandhra leaders to identify a suitable location for the new capital, and said that the Centre would extend the required financial assistance for its formation.
Srinivas said that the Congress party will do justice to all the regions in the state after the bifurcation.
He claimed that the movement for Telangana was spearheaded by the Congress legislators. He said that 41 Congress MLAs from the region made a representation to Sonia Gandhi and other leaders in 2004 demanding support for Telangana.
The former PCC chief said that the Telangana state would have 10 districts with Hyderabad as its capital.
At the event, Srinivas also slammed Seemandhra leaders for describing the Telangana resolution as being "politically motivated".
Addressing the same meeting, Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao accused the Seemandhra leaders of misleading the people of their region by giving them false hopes that the state would remain united.
"Telangana state is almost a reality now, and no one can stop its formation," he said.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, and other ministers and legislators from the region.(INN)
