Sania Mirza’s family will need help to deal with this one - and to put it a bit cruelly, maybe a little more help than Sohrab Mirza might need. Ever since news of
Sania’s cancelled engagement broke out, the media has been quite abuzz with the latest on the fading star’s life.
The family being flooded with a mess of pointed questions is one thing, but the development has sparked off wisecracking tweets on the social networking site Twitter about Sania’s penchant for first-round exits and news channel talk shows on women’s careers and marriage.
Sania was going to wed her fiancée Sohrab Mirza after a couple of years, and she had declared that she would quit tennis after marriage. Not surprisingly, news of the cancelled engagement has been met with a tinge of pity - Sania’s career isn’t going great guns anyway.
The 23-year-old Arjuna awardee has, of late, sparked off more controversies than wins in the profession. Muslim religious groups criticized her dressing sense, her comments on pre-marital sex alienated her from some more groups, and the pointing of her bare feet toward the Indian flag while being seated at an event brought her to the brink of prosecution under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.
Still, her admirers might have breathed a collective sigh of relief. Two of them reportedly barged into her home a day before her high-profile engagement, demanding that she marry them.
