Distraught over the omission of his name from the list of the prisoners whose sentences would be remitted on Republic Day, a prisoner on Wednesday attempted to commit suicide at the Cherlapally central jail.
Hailing from Hayath Nagar in the outskirts of Hyderabad, Koteswara Rao has been in jail for the past 7 years after being sentenced for life in connection with a crime.
He attempted to commit suicide as he was distressed because his name did not figure in the list of the prisoners whose sentences would be remitted on January 26th.
The inmates immediately informed the jail authorities who rushed him to the Pranahitha hospital in the jail.
Superintendent G Jayawardhan said that Koteswara Rao was out of danger.
Meanwhile, the prisoners of the jail on Wednesday started a relay hunger fast, demanding remission for those who had completed 10 years of imprisonment, based on the their good conduct.
