Hundreds of villagers from the Kondapaka and Koti mandals of the Medak district today agitated against the construction of the Mallanna Sagar reservoir, which would result in the submerging of villages and land acquisition.
Following the Telangana government's land acquisition notice and the subsequent suicides of two farmers in the past week, many villagers including men, women, senior citizens and children from Pallepahad and Vemulaghat villages in the Koti mandal, and Erravalli and Singaram villages in the Kondapaka mandal, who took part in the agitation were proceeding towards the collectorate to stage a protest against the government's decision to go ahead with the land acquisition and the submergence of villages.
The agitation turned violent after the protestors allegedly took to pelting stones at the police who were present there to monitor the situation. Tensions rose when the police allegedly baton-charged and fired warning shots in the air, and threw tear-gas shells, in retaliation to quell the stone-throwers.
10 persons were reportedly injured during the incident.
