The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Chennai today declined to intervene in the Telangana Secretariat demolition issue as the High Court had already favoured the construction of a new Secretariat by razing the existing structures.
Reacting on Congress MP Revanth Reddy's petition seeking a stay on the demolition for violation of environmental issues, the NGT said that it could not stall the demolition of the existing buildings.
Revanth Reddy sought orders to ensure that environmental pollution was not caused by the government by demolishing the structures.
The tribunal opined that the High Court and the Supreme Court had refrained from stalling the demolition, and that the union environment ministry had formed a committee to report in two months on any environmental pollution, waste management and related issues due to the demolition, making any further action unnecessary.
The committee comprises members of the CPCB, the state PCB and IIT Hyderabad.
