An MBA graduate from Uttar Pradesh was today arrested by the Cyberabad police for cheating people using a fake grocery and furniture website.
The accused, Rishabh Upadhyay alias Chandan, did a Master's in international marketing. The 30-year-old is a web developer from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Though Upadhyay has been apprehended, his associate, Rahul, a digital marketing professional from Punjab, is still at large.
Talking to the press about the arrest, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police V C Sajjanar stated that the two swindlers had developed fake websites that pretended to sell furniture and groceries at discounted prices and that through these, they had cheated scores of gullible shoppers from across the nation.
"We received a complaint from a person living in Khajaguda. He told us that he had placed an order for groceries worth Rs 1,544.40 on a website called www.zopnow.in, a website similar to bigbasket.com. However, even after paying, he did not get any confirmation for the order. His attempts to reach out to customer care through phone-calls and emails also did not help resolve the issue. The victim then realised that he had been conned and lodged a complaint. On the basis of this complaint, a case was registered and Rishabh Upadhyay was arrested by the Raidurgam police. In the past too, Upadhyay has cheated people using websites promising US visas or jobs. This time, he and Rahul took advantage of the lockdown and created a fake grocery website. We have already seized Rs 40 lakh in cash, two mobile phones, two laptops, 20 debit cards and six bank passbooks from him," the CP said.
Further, Sajjanar advised the public not to believe in websites providing high discounts and urged them to report all such suspicion websites by calling 9490617310 or sending a WhatsApp text to 9490617444.
