KTR Slams Centre For Population-Based Delimitation Process
The Telangana IT minister said the proposed delimitation of Parliament constituencies based on population would disproportionately impact the South-Indian States.
BRS working president and IT minister K T Rama Rao strongly criticised the union government's proposed delimitation process of Parliament constituencies based on population, and said that the process would disproportionately impact the South-Indian States.
Rao said that the proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha seats after 2026, in its present form, would be a serious injustice to the southern States, and that these States should not be penalised for effectively implementing the union government's policies on population control.
"It is unfair and painful that the southern States, which are moving forward with progressive policies, get fewer Lok Sabha seats due to this new delimitation. And that States which do not control their populations despite the union government's repeated appeals, especially the northern States, will benefit from an increase in Lok Sabha seats," the minister said.
"After their 33% contribution to the GDP, it's unfair that the representation of the Southern States in Parliament may be limited to just 20%. These proud contributors to the national economy and growth should not be undermined due to inappropriate methodology in the Lok Sabha delimitation process. We need a fair and equitable system that ensures that every region's voice is heard," he added.
He called upon the leaders and people of all South Indian States to rise above their political affiliations and raise their voices collectively against the injustice to be meted out due to the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats after 2026.
