The Chief Medical Officer of Gandhi Hospital, Dr Vasanth Kumar, created quite a spectacle at the hospital today.
Dr Kumar was suspended from his post, along with three other doctors of the hospital, for reportedly carrying out a misinformation campaign over coronavirus, claiming that cases of ccoronavirus had surfaced in the hospital.
The Telangana government issued his suspension order on Saturday. However, the CMO came to know about his suspension only on Monday morning after he checked his mail.
The doctor immediately tried to speak to his higher-ups on the issue, but failed to get any response. He then called even Health Minister Etala Rajender, but failed to get any assurance of revocation of his suspension orders.
Dr Kumar then ostensibly decided to commit suicide and reached the hospital along with two bottles of petrol, a lighter and a suicide letter. He claimed that he was being targeted because he was fighting corruption and nepotism in the hospital, and spoke about issue for an hour.
He alleged that corruption in Gandhi Hospital was much greater than even the ESIC scam, and that he was suspended as he had exposed several scams at the hospital.
Many colleagues tried to approach him to stop him, but he warned them against it.
The police who reached the spot almost as soon as he threatened to immolate himself, also tried for a long time to pacify him in vain, and finally carefully maneuvered to take away his lighter and petrol bottles before taking him away to a police station for counselling.
