A group of BRS leaders led by the party's working president K T Rama Rao today met Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan to discuss the UGC draft rules, and submitted a memorandum.
The delegation later met Union minister Nitin Gadkari and urged him to extend National Highway 365B from the Suryapet-Sircilla road to Korutla.
Speaking to the media later, KTR alleged that the rights of the States were being undermined in the name of the UGC regulations.
"The new rules will hurt students. We met Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan to convey our concerns. The new rules are designed among other things to hand over the responsibility of search committees to Governors, and are intended to enable the Centre to take over the universities through the State Governors. It is against the spirit of the Constitution for the Centre to control the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in State universities through Governors. Such actions undermine the spirit of federalism," he said.
He alleged that the new rules would also disadvantage SC, ST and BC students.
"We have submitted a six-page report outlining our objections to the UGC regulations to the Union minister. We requested him to amend the rules and urged him not to make any decisions against the spirit of federalism," he said.
