Biotechnologist Dr B S Bajaj Passes Away At 93

Eminent Hyderabad-based biotechnologist Dr B S Bajaj passed away on Tuesday, July 28.

Eminent Hyderabad-based biotechnologist Dr B S Bajaj passed away on Tuesday, July 28.

He was 93.

Dr Bajaj was the key person behind the Genome Valley and the annual BioAsia conferences in Hyderabad, and is considered the doyen of the biotechnology industry in Hyderabad.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao mourned the death of Dr Bajaj. The CM recalled the services rendered by Dr Bajaj as Founder Secretary-General of the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA), and how he worked tirelessly to make Genome Valley and BioAsia a reality.

The Chief Minister also recalled that in BioAsia 2019, Dr Bajaj was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.

Governor Dr Tamilsai Soundararajan too condoled the demise of Dr Bajaj.

The Governor said, "I express my deep condolences at the demise of Dr Bajaj, who put Hyderabad in the global map of biotechnology."

B P Acharya, Director General, Dr MCR HRD Institute of Telangana, and Patron of FABA, said, "Dr Bajaj, an accomplished biotech industry veteran in the state, ensured industry-academia interface and helped formulate the first biotech policy of the state that paved the way for the growth of the Genome Valley, and of BioAsia as an annual event to showcase it. His benign presence will be greatly missed. Deepest condolences."

Dr D Balasubramanian, former Director, CCMB, said, "Dr Bajaj was the founder technology promoter of the biotechnology initiative in Hyderabad in 1999. He worked harmoniously and hand-in-hand with the government in that year in putting together what has now become the famous Genome Valley, with help from Dr Krishna Ella of Bharat Biotech, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, ICICI and the government. He has been a guiding force for many scientists, technologists, drug and vaccine manufacturers, and government officials."
