Panel of 'Outsiders' to Pick 'Babus' ...

* Panel of 'Outsiders' to Pick 'Babus' ...

In a radical move, the GOI has decided to have 'Outsiders', including a Management Expert, for appointing Bureaucrats / 'Babus' and examining their Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs). By next month a Three-Member Panel of Experts will help the Appointments Committee of Cabinet to pick Secretaries, Additional Secretaries and Joint Secretaries. - TNIE, 14 Sep 2004, p 1 & 9.

Save My City... Save My Life

* Save My City... Save My Life

Oh Lord of the Lords... please see that a Setwin bus or a last century sand lorry does not breakdown in the middle of the congested roads so that the traffic does not get held up on either side, when I hurriedly go to catch my train at Nampally railway station. Oh Ganesha... kindly see that deadly polluting four-wheelers do not exhaust dense black smoke directly into my nostrils and eyes at full blast from point-blank range while I am waiting at a crowded traffic signal on my two-wheeler. Finally, oh Almighty Merciful... please save the Hussainsagar from becoming a deadsagar from dumping of your idols massively year after year.

Be Happy, Neighbour!

by HH » Sat Oct 09, 2004 6:40 pm

Be Happy, Neighbour!

* Be Happy, Neighbour!

Their beaming faces said it all

HYDERABAD, OCT. 8. Their beaming faces said it all. Mohammad Irtiza Hasan and his wife, Shama Hasan, could not contain their happiness. After over two months of stay in Global Hospitals, they would be returning home, Karachi, with their hale and hearty daughter who underwent a successful liver transplant surgery at the hospital.

Even as five-year-old Batool Hasan snuggled close to her father, Mr. Hasan and his wife said that their daughter would soon be attending school and lead a normal life.

With their visa valid till November first week, the family would stay with a friend's family in the city before returning home by month-end. "We will be spending half of Ramazan month here," Ms. Shama Hasan said. She was all praise for Hyderabadis and their friendly nature. "It's not true to think that Pakistanis have hatred for Indians. Look at the number of Pakistanis bringing their children to India for medical treatment. It only shows their immense trust and belief in Indians. Do come to Pakistan and experience and understand our love for you."

Praising profusely the liver transplant surgeon from King's College Hospital, London, Mohamed Rela, who led the team which carried out the twin surgeries involving the removal of a slice of liver from the girl's father and transplanting it in the child, she said: "The surgery normally costs 20,000 pounds. But, he does it free for poor Indians and he extended the gesture to Pakistanis too."

The couple said they enjoyed Hyderabad biryani and sheek kabab. "We would taste haleem too."

"TheFamily.com" ... Spreading Kindness

by HH » Mon Oct 11, 2004 10:59 am

TheFamily.com

* TheFamily.com... Spreading Kindness

TheFamily.com is a Special Internet Site in providing positive and encouraging pages for every member of the family. Its goal is to "Strengthen Families" worldwide. Recent studies in family living conclude that kindness is the "single most important ingredient" in a happy home. And kindness is modelled long before it is taught. Cultivating kindness is important, not only in the homes but in the hearts, not only among the children but all. Cultivating kindness in children develops a priceless quality which will infuse all other areas of their lives. To teach kindness and friendliness is to create an awareness that being kind and considerate is more admirable than being tough or strong.

* Does evil exist?

The university professor challenged his students with this question. Did God create everything that exists?

A student bravely replied, "Yes, he did!"

"God created everything?" the professor asked.

"Yes sir", the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, & according to the principal that our works define who we are then God is evil".

The student became quiet before such an answer. The professor was quite pleased with himself & boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand & asked, "Can I ask you a question, professor?"

"Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up & asked, "Professor does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat.

Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, & heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert & incapable of reaction in that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat. The student continued.

"Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does".

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors & study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness & illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime & violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness & cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God.

God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love that exist just as does light & heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

The young man's name --- Albert Einstein

TheFamily.com - 28 /10 : Look Up!

by HH » Thu Oct 28, 2004 9:51 am

TheFamily.com - 28 /10

* Look Up!

[img]http://www.thefamily.com/MCj01351210000[1].wmf[/img]

* Buzzard

# If you put a buzzard (vulture) in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

[img]http://www.thefamily.com/MCSO02716_0000[1].wmf[/img]

Bat

# * The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

[img]http://www.thefamily.com/MCAN00221_0000[1].wmf[/img]

Bumblebee

# * A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

*** In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not ever realizing that they merely have to look UP…the answer is always ABOVE. Look up, say a little prayer and take off. How simple the answer can be.

Raw Living food refers to the consumption of un-processed, whole plant-based food which has never been cooked.

# Who are the "Raw-foodists"?

"Raw-foodists" are those who consume a largely uncooked diet, usually at least 75% (many say 100% is the only true path). Raw foods include: fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, grains and legumes (in a sprouted form), dried fruits, seaweeds, and fresh juices.

# Why go Raw?

Benefits of the raw vegan diet include weight normalization, increased energy, improved digestion, improved immune system, need less sleep, improved appearance (especially skin), lower body fat and reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk of degenerative diseases, connection with nature and one's food and increased longevity to name just some.

HappyCow's Global Guide - 1 / 11

* Happy Cow's Wisdom Quotes

# "The correct way for the people to spread vegetarianism is to reason out its beauties, which should be exhibited in their lives."

-Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi

# "Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty."

- Albert Einstein

# "Nothing will benefit health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet"

- Albert Einstein

* Q. Is Vegetarianism Important?

ShantiMayi: Well, important for what or whom? Are you asking, is vegetarianism important for spiritual awakening? Actually there are many spiritual people who are not vegetarians. I have been vegetarian for most of my life. For me, it has been easier to not eat meat. We have a garden in our ashrams (except India), however I have never killed an animal in my life. In our ashrams we eat vegetarian food. It is lighter (satvic) in the body to eat vegetarian. It will make a difference to your entire physical system to omit meat from your diet.

But is it important? This you have to answer for yourself. For the world, it takes more energy and cost to raise cattle than it does to raise vegetables or grain. There are many good reasons for eating a vegetarian diet. Spiritually, it makes sense to eat good foods and organic (biological) food as much as possible. If you are healthy, it supports good health. If you are unhealthy, it supports wellness. A good, healthy body is advantageous for everyone. For spiritual people is it best to care for the wellness of the body, when it is unwell, it becomes a preoccupation. This is not to say the unhealthy people can not excel in understanding and realization. Good health is simply a hurdle dissolved.

Happy New Year! ...

by HH » Tue Nov 02, 2004 10:14 am

* Happy New Year! ...

# Happy New Year? That depends on which calendar you use!

# Ah, the first month of a new year! A time of fresh starts and clean slates, celebrations and resolutions -- for those who follow the Gregorian Calendar, anyway.

# If you follow the Jewish Calendar, January 1, 1998, actually is the third day of the fourth month (Tevet) in the year 5758. The Jewish year starts in autumn, and its calendar starts with the year of Creation, according to tradition, 3,760 years and three months before Christ was born.

# According to the Chinese Calendar, the year 4695 begins on January 28.

# The next Islamic New Year's Day, 1 Muharram 1419 A.H., is April 28.

# And if you follow the World Calendar -- advocated by the World Calendar Association since 1930 -- January 1, 1998, is January 1, 1998, except that it falls not on a Thursday, but on a Sunday, as it would for all of time if the World Calendar were to be adopted.

* And this is but a handful of the calendars that the world follows! It would take a month of Sundays to explore all the alternative ways we have of marking time! (If you're so inclined, @Today's Calendar and Clock Page is a wonderful starting point!)

The Vegan Society ... HAPPY WORLD VEGAN DAY & National V

by HH » Wed Nov 03, 2004 5:18 pm

* The Vegan Society ... HAPPY WORLD VEGAN DAY & National Vegan Week

* The Vegan Society est. 1944

To all our benefactors and passionate supporters, we wish to say thank you - for your hard work, passion and compassion.

“Instead of weeping at the dark, try to light one candle,” is AC Grayling’s message to those who despair at the state of the world today, because every little bit really does count. You can’t let those that cause suffering win; you have to do something by your own light.

All our supporters do something about it, every day. For that, we honour you and ask for your continuous support. To the future supporters and those who are still unsure… Go vegan at least two days a week as a personal protest against battery farming; incorporate more raw and living vegan foods into your diet as a backlash against junk food culture and to reduce energy consumption by eliminating the need for cooking. If you are already vegan, encourage your friends to be vegan for a week or month or life.

Avoid fast food because of the industry’s use of battery-farmed animals, excessive packaging and its promotion of a global monoculture.

So, every day, fill your champagne glass of life to the brim with values -- and drink deep to your life and the joy that it can and should be.

To all vegans worldwide – HAPPY WORLD VEGAN DAY! Happy life to all beings.
- Kostana and the Team – Andrew, Carol, Catriona, Cliff, David, Erica, Jody, John, Peter, Sundari and Tony

* HAPPY DIAMOND JUBILEE!
Make a difference in the 60th vegan year 1944 - 2004!
World Vegan Day - 1 Nov 2004 was The Vegan Society's 60th Birthday :
We plan to double the number of vegans worldwide by the end of the year ...

Islam and Animal Welfare

by HH » Sat Nov 06, 2004 8:14 pm

* Islam and Animal Welfare

Image

* The Beautiful Religion of Islam has always viewed Animals as a Special part of God's Creation. The Qur'an, the Hadith, and the History of Islamic Civilization offer many Examples of Kindness, Mercy, and Compassion for Animals.

# Thanks to Westernized factory-farming methods that are used in many parts of the world, animals suffer hideously in the industries that kill them to produce meat, milk, and eggs. These products not only bring pain and suffering to the animals themselves, they are also implicated in a variety of human diseases, including cancer, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. The intensive production of animals for food is also extremely damaging to the environment.

Cheer Up With Chikoo / sapota

* Cheer Up With Chikoo / Sapota

*
NATURE’s bounty is unlimited. Mother Earth gives you a wealth of nutritious food as also various fruits. You only have to select the ones you want.

**
Chikoo is a rich source of minerals, it also has many other advantages. It does not get infected with insects and pests and bears plenty of fruit.

***
Image
There are a few known varieties of chikoo like cricket ball, chattri, kalli-patti etc. Cricket ball is round in shape, whereas the other two varieties are oval and elliptical. People usually prefer the latter two, as these are more sweet.

Resistance Is Fruitful: 'Smart' Brace Retrains Injured Joint

*
Resistance Is Fruitful: 'Smart' Brace Retrains Injured Joints

**
IN mint condition, the knee is a biomechanical marvel, an intricately linked interaction of bones, ligaments, tendons and cartilage that produces smooth, stable motion.

But as professional athletes and weekend exercisers know only too well, the knee is also a classic weak spot, vulnerable to damage and slow to heal. Strengthening it after injury or surgery may require hours on the bulky machines of a hospital or gym.

# Now a mechanical engineer at Northeastern University has devised a small portable device that people may be able to strap onto their knees to rehabilitate them as they walk around doing daily chores.

The device is an adaptation of a standard off-the-shelf knee brace. Constantinos Mavroidis, an associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at the university, and his students added small, tightly sealed containers to either side of the brace at the knee.

They filled the containers with sets of small plates and a special ''smart'' fluid that changes from liquid to gel when it is zapped by electricity.

When a computer-controlled voltage is sent to the plates, an electric field is created and the fluid within instantly grows viscous. As the knee flexes and the plates rotate relative to one another, resistance is created.

The device imitates the job of the large machines used for training, exercise and rehabilitation in a gym. But instead of increasing the resistance with heavy blocks or bars, scientists can control the brace by changing the voltage.

''It's basically a weight-lifting machine that you can slap on your leg,'' said Jason Nikitczuk, a graduate student in mechanical engineering who worked with Dr. Mavroidis on the project. ''You can adjust how much weight you are applying, just like you change weights on a machine.''

The device cannot yet be bought off the shelf; it exists only as a research prototype in Dr. Mavroidis's laboratory.

***
Conventional braces, called orthotics, typically are not programmable. ''They are mechanical, and don't easily vary the forces over a range of activities,'' ... Dr. Mavroidis's prototype can be programmed to produce different levels of resistance for walking, for example, and stair climbing. ... ''This could be a nice portable way to put an exercise machine on a patient instead of going to a gym... ''

# ''If they design it as wearable,...'you can continuously exercise in daily activities,'' as opposed to doing rehabilitation only at a hospital or gym.
# ''It's exciting, what's happening in orthotics and prosthetics ... But these devices won't be on the market for a while. It will probably be at least five years before we move from prototypes to actual products ...''
# Dr. Mavroidis hopes that his invention may one day find use far from earthbound exercise rooms. Long trips in space cause significant loss in the bone and muscle mass of astronauts, he said. But a device like his might be worn by the astronauts during their daily activities to strengthen their legs.

''I think it might work to prevent the effects of weightlessness,'' he said.

Flower Fair In China

by HH » Fri Nov 12, 2004 11:04 am

* Flower Fair In China

Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, is a beautiful old city. Legend has it that in ancient times five immortals in colourful colthes once descended on to Guangzhou on five rams. On their departure, each of them left a rice ear, expressing the wish that Guangzhou would be forever free from famine. Hence Guangzhou is also known as the City of Rams and the City of Rice Ears. A stone sculpture of five rams on Yuexiu Hill in the centre of the city had become the emblem of the city.
Walking along the streets of Guangzhou, I was immediately taken by the vegetable stalls under green and luxuriant trees selling all kinds of greens. ...

Image

Along the street, flowers are arranged into a variety of pictures and beloved figures from popular legends.

# When the Spring Festival approaches, the streets and fairs bustle with people shopping and florists from suburban areas setting up temporary shacks for the flower fair.

# Guangzhou is known for its flower fair held annually during the Spring Festival. The fair in the centre of the city is one of Guangzhou's six major flower fairs. The streets are decorated with fragrant and beautiful fresh flowers, golden tangerines, and elegant miniture landscapes, looking like rivers of flowers in the distance. If we connected the flower stalls, there would be a flower street stretching for miles.

Happy Earth Day (23 April)

* Happy Earth Day (23 April)

by John Forster & Tom Chapin

© 1992 Limousine Music Co. & The Last Music Co. (ASCAP)

One day she spun out of the sun.
Did she know at the hour of her birth?
That she'd cool and she'd bloom and one day become
The garden we know as the Earth.

Happy happy Earth Day,
Happy happy Earth Day.
From the schools of leaping dolphins and the herds of kangaroo
Happy Earth Day to you.

We celebrate your waterfalls, your glaciers and typhoons,
The sweet smell of your meadows on rainbow afternoons.
The northern lights on starry nights and when the night is gone
The fiery magic of your dawn.

Happy happy Earth Day,
Happy happy Earth Day.
From the fields of chirping crickets and the frogs of Blue Bayou
Happy Earth Day to you.

From the highest Himalaya to the mountains under sea,
From the frozen tip of Greenland to the sands of Galilee.
We're gathering together to raise our voice in song
And pledge to keep you green and strong.

Happy happy Earth Day,
Happy happy Earth Day.

Every time I smell a flower or feel the morning dew,
Every time I see a baby learning something new,
I'm amazed again how blessed we are and it's all thanks to you.

Happy Earth Day to you.
Happy Earth Day to you.

This song appears on both Tom Chapin's Billy The Squid and This Pretty Planet CD's.

something to think about

by enigma » Tue Nov 16, 2004 11:39 am

A story tells that two friends were walking

through the desert. During some

point of the journey they had an argument, and

one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt,

but without saying anything, wrote in the sand:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND

SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

They kept on walking until they found an oasis,

where they decided to take a bath. The one who

had been slapped got stuck in the mire and

started drowning, but the friend saved him.

After he recovered from the near

drowning, he wrote on a stone:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.

The friend who had slapped and

saved his best friend asked him,

"After I hurt you, you wrote in the

sand and now, you write on a stone,

why?" The other friend replied "When someone

hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds

of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone

does something good for us, we must engrave

it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND

AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

A New Day Is Dawning

by enigma » Tue Nov 16, 2004 11:42 am

A brand new day is dawning

And as it gets its start,

I want you know I am thinking

Of you with warmth in my heart.

I hope your day is very special,

No one deserves it more than you!

You are such a kindhearted person,

It shows in everything that you do.

So, have a perfect morning

And an even lovelier day...

May happiness surround you

Always.... not just for today! :)

Whatever comes

by enigma » Tue Nov 16, 2004 11:51 am

It's easy to listen to those who agree with you. Yet it can be
far more valuable and enlightening to carefully listen to those
who disagree. It feels good to receive a compliment or a word of
encouragement. Yet it can be just as valuable, or even more so,
to receive criticism.

It's great when you can get the results you desire, with efforts
that come easily and naturally. Yet it can be even more valuable
when you come up against difficult, complicated challenges, and
must work your way through them.

Some days will bring rain and stinging cold wind, others will
bring warm, brilliant sunshine. Yet each day has its own unique,
positive value.

Whatever comes, there's something to be gained from it. Whether
it is what you wanted and what you planned for, or whether it
is not, there's something you can use.

The comings and goings of life may often seem arbitrary,
troublesome and unfair. Yet the value, when you take the time
to see it, to live it, just keeps on coming no matter what.

tension

by enigma » Tue Nov 16, 2004 11:59 am

The moment you are in tension
you loose your Attention
You are in total confusion
and have no concentration

No mood to take any suggestion
often you get irritation
and you show your anger through action
but do not loose your temper at this junction

Try to control your emotion
Understand the situation
by doing meditation

Whatever the problem is you find a solution by
solving you get everyone's Appreciation
It helps you rising in your position
Controlling temper in life you will get
satisfaction

attitude

by enigma » Tue Nov 16, 2004 12:17 pm

Harvard and Stanford Universities have reported that 85% the reason a
person gets a job and gets ahead in that job is due to ATTITUDE; and only 15% is because of technical or specific skills. Interesting, isn't it?

You spent how much money on your education? And you spent how much money on building your positive attitude? Ouch. That hurts.

Now here's an interesting thought. With the "RIGHT" attitude, you can and
will develop the necessary skills. So where's your emphasis? Skill
building? Attitude building? Unfortunately, "NEITHER" is the real answer
for many people. Perhaps if more people knew how simple it is to develop
and maintain a positive attitude they would invest more time doing so. So
here we go.

Five steps for staying positive in a negative world:

1.Understand that failure is an event, it is not a person. Yesterday
ended last night; today is a brand new day, and it's yours. You were born
towin, but to be a winner you must plan to win, prepare to win, and then you can expect to win.

2. Become a lifetime student. Learn just one new word every day and in five years you will be able to talk with just about anybody about anything. When your vocabulary improves, your I.Q. goes up 100% of the time, according to Georgetown Medical School.

3. Read something informational or inspirational every day. Reading
for 20 minutes at just 240 words per minute will enable you to read 20,
200-pagebooks each year. That's 18 more than the average person reads! What an enormous competitive advantage . . . if you'll just read for 20 minutes a day.

4. The University of Southern California reveals that you can acquire
the equivalent of two years of a college education in three years just by
listening to motivational and educational cassettes on the way to your job
and again on the way home. What could be easier?

5. Start the day and end the day with positive input into your
mind.Inspirational messages cause the brain to flood with dopamine and
norepinephrine, the energizing neurotransmitters; with endorphins, the
endurance neurotransmitters; and with serotonin, the feel-good
about-yourself neurotransmitter. Begin and end the day by reading or doing something positive!

Remember: Success is a process, not an event. Invest the time in your
building a RIGHT & POSITIVE attitude. It will pay off well in your skills
as well as your career.

Have a good day!!!
