Niche production market moving to India!

by Surya » Mon Aug 11, 2003 10:40 pm

Hello fellow Hyderabadis...
My name is Surya, and as you all know, a lot of businesses worldwide are now moving part or all of their activities to India or China. We need to get ahead of China to be a developed country by 2020. And the twin cities definitely have the potential. I was wondering if any of you guys know what are the popular and niche production oriented products and markets that people are now pursuing madly in India. One day I\'d like to see Hyderabad emerge as the production capital of the world... and it\'s a great industry that has a lot of future potential. Please let me know of your opinions and ideas. Thanks, happy foruming. Surya.

Hi ZC.

You\'ve got a point, bro. But things can be better.
There is one car wheel (rim) manufacturing company in Andhra that is exporting to USA. Same with clothing exports from many cities in India (mainly Delhi, Mumbai)
What will happen in the future is that even manufacturing will become a type of service, so Bajaj will dedicate one unit only to cater to OEMs like GM or Ford or Toyota. In the same way Ashok Leyland will dedicate to some other OEMs.
Ha ha ha, sarcasm !! Maruti (Suzuki) is slowly losing market share (losers who want to show that they are successful say that the actually number is increasing). Hero (of Honda) has beaten the traditional Bajaj. So have Mortien (European technology) and washing power (again the same). ISRO (the leader you may think) doesn\'t actually feature in the top 20 satellite firms in the world. Even beat the heat Pankhas are made of European technology. The software leaders don\'t have many product based companies and as a result, you've got to compete with Thailand and Vietnam. And then, a comment by the Malaysian army \"If the Indian army doesnt use the tanks India produces, how do u expect us to buy them?\". As long as basic sciences are neglected in the country, the engineers will continue to take it to the dogs. The famous DAAD program to Germany gets a yearly report saying \"Indians are good at theory\", but practically, they are a bit backward. A very subtle way of saying that we actually break the equipment the first time we use it and the after the nth time, we still say, \"I know the theory but...\". Absolutely right, we can become good managers coz we have good theoretical knowledge, but who will do the blue collar jobs ? The Chinese, Europeans, everyone except the Indians. Long live the ability to supervise and long live the hidden disadvantages.

It is stupid to think that ISRO is waste as it doesn\'t feature in top 20. The report you mentioned surveyed Commercial organizations and not State-owned ones. Heck, even NASA doesn\'t figure on that list. Will you say that NASA is useless? ISRO by no means is a commerical entity, its a govt organization and with a fleet of 35 satellites and two types of launch vehicles. It is one of the leading space institutes in the world. Learn abt Antrix, the commercial arm of ISRO, learn abt IRS series of satellites whose images even USA used during wars, visit Spaceimaging.com for more info and then comment on ISRO.

And if you think that Indian economy is going to collapse, read this
http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story ... t_id=29666
It is not just one company, but a number of Indian companies are exporting auto-car companies. The top 15 auto manufacturers in the world now source their components from India. Bharat Forge, Sundaram, Mother-Sun(?) India and Cooper are just some of them. TATA now sells cars in more than 10 countries including Spain, Malaysia and Africa. Indica is now being sold under Rover brand. Mahindra sells tractors in USA under its own brand name and has two manufacturing centers in USA. It is going to sell Scorpio in Russia, Europe and China. Even Bajaj sells in USA and has dealers in 23 of the 50 states of USA.
At the risk of sounding jingoistic, I want to say that India is developing very fast, but we have some way to go.

Bhayya, how much R & D is going on in manufacturing in India? very little. A duplicate product from China is durable, but the same duplicate in India does not work well, why? Ability to manufacture products well should be universal. You mentioned that they supply parts, who supplies the design? There is a long long way to go. The problem is the attitude towards blue-collar jobs is in India. Bhohoth bhari padega on the long run.

First of all, sorry for letting off the steam and calling you stupid. I apologise. But your statement got to my nerves. Anyway you are not to be blamed, it's the people at Times of India who carried that news article (copied from spacedaily.com, Internet magazine) and rest of DDM followed.
You\'re right when you say that not much money is going into R & D, but the reason is not that we lack capability but the necessity at this moment (not in every industry atleast). If you look at the Pharma industry every major company has R & D with Dr. Reddy\'s and Shanta Biotech leading the band wagon, you have to realize that they didn\'t start off as a research institutes but as companies which copied western patented formulas and then after establishing in the market they started investing in R & D.
About the companies I mentioned in previous post, most of the Indian companies have their own R & D and the products they manufacture are their own designs.
When you talk abt our economy, you have to keep in mind that not until 1990 we were completely capitalist. We were a socialist state and Govt had control on everything. Keeping that in mind I see a lot of progress has been made in one decade and it has just started. We have a long way to go. If you want to continue discussion, let\'s take it offline. You can email me.
Regards.

My dear fellow Hyderabadi\\\'s and Indians, I am proud of you guys because each one of you have your own points of view of India\\\'s development in the production market, some skeptical, some critical and some very positive...like Mr. Kalam said, our generation is not going to be remembered with the number of religious structures we build but by the economic and cultural prosperity we create for our sons and daughters to continue in prosperity. It seems to me that we have strayed off a little bit from the original topic I started, but its all very important anyway. There have been some very interesting comments in the previous posts. I humbly request you not to indulge in attacks on each other and focus on the market areas that are catching up fast, especially the ones that have financial and social importance, that mean quality of life for the people. Personally, to start with, I want to be a contributor to the quality of life of the people of my state, and be remembered for providing them with a scientific product that enhances theri life, and would hate to waste away my life doing nothing but earn a living for myself and my family...I am interested in knowing about things that are the current and future trend, that are self sustaining products and those that would be in constant demand..Please keep them coming, and as a young engineer I appreciate all of your scientific ideas and opinions that I am sure will be very helpful to me, and you too. Thanks a lot, Mera Bharath Mahan!!! Surya!
