Republic India - We're One Big Happy Family!

Wake Up, India. We're One Big Happy Family! ... Happy Republic Day Of Families Who Have Married From All Castes And Cultures!

A RECENT survey by a business journal showed that over 20 per cent of urban Indian women viewed marriage outside the community as "a common thing". Choice in marriages, known by that quaint Indianism — love marriages — is no longer looked askance in metros.

"It has worked out wonderfully," says Monica Dayakar, a Punjabi married to a Tamil Iyengar, whose daughter has wedded a Bengali and son engaged to a girl who has a Goan father and Dutch mother. "We have broken the identity barrier and don't identify ourselves with such and such State anymore." For the Dayakars, as with theatre/ television personality C.R. Simha's family (a Kannadiga family where the son married a Sikh and the daughter a Kodava), it has been a huge learning experience.

These families have begun to celebrate all Indian festivals ...

Remembering ... Wodehousian Magic

Remembering ... Wodehousian Magic

The popularity of P.G. Wodehouse among Indians is two-fold. One, his readers do not have to identify with any of his characters. Two, his insidious but good-humoured subversion of the language, conducted with straight-faced aplomb, appeals most of all to a people who have acquired English but rebel against its heritage.

VALENTINE'S Day has just passed. Twenty-seven Valentine's Days ago, I was sitting in my college room at Delhi University when All India Radio announced that P.G. Wodehouse had died. It was a typically sunny February afternoon in Delhi, but I felt a cloud of impenetrable darkness. The newly (and belatedly) knighted Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, creator of Jeeves and of the prize pig the Empress of Blandings, was in his 94th year; yet his death still came as a shock. Three decades earlier, Wodehouse had reacted to the passing of his stepdaughter, Leonora, with the numbed words: "I thought she was immortal." I had thought Wodehouse was immortal too, and I felt the bereavement keenly. ...

Part of Wodehouse's appeal to Indians certainly lies in the uniqueness of his style, which inveigled us into a sort of conspiracy of universalism: his humour was inclusive, for his mock-serious generalisations were, of course, as absurd to those he was ostensibly writing about as to us. "'Like so many substantial citizens of America, he had married young and kept on marrying, springing from blonde to blonde like the chamois of the Alps leaping from crag to crag." My own favourites stretch the possibilities of the language in unexpected ways: "She had more curves than a scenic railway"; "I turned him down like a bedspread"; and the much-quoted "if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled".

This insidious but good-humoured subversion of the language, conducted with straight-faced aplomb, appeals most of all to a people who have acquired English but rebel against its heritage. The colonial connection left strange patterns on the minds of the connected. Wodehouse's is a world we can share with the English on equal terms, because they are just as surprised by its enchantments. Perhaps that is as good an argument as any for our continued national love, 54 years after we cast out his compatriots, for the works of P.G. Wodehouse.

Double Century ... Super Secunderabad!

HYDERABAD: Former Union Minister and BJP national secretary Bandaru Dattatreya has urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to organise year-long celebrations to mark the completion of 200 years of Secunderabad.

In a letter to Dr. Reddy, he suggested that the Government safeguard heritage architecture and monuments in Secunderabad. The celebrations should be continued throughout the year 2006, he said, listing among the monuments Secunderabad Cantonment, railway station, Gandhi Hospital, Polo grounds, Parade grounds.

...

*
" In 1798, a subsidiary alliance for military and political cooperation was signed between the Hyderabad Nizam and the British East India Company. Thereafter, an area north of what is now the Hussain Sagar Lake was established as a cantonment. After the Nizam Sikander Jah, the area was named as Secunderabad."

India's Greatest Wicket Taker ... Anil Kumble

by HH » Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:07 pm

India's Greatest Wicket Taker ... Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble is without doubt India's greatest spinner of all time - not only in terms of wickets but also by being a member of the winning team on more occasions than any other bowler in the history of Indian cricket. Be it Test matches or ODIs, Anil has always been a match-winner. If in Test matches he is a no-nonsense wicket-taking bowler, in ODIs, he can attack and contain at will. Quiet, precise, ruthless - Anil goes about his business of demolishing the opposition with clinical efficiency, based on the simple principles of line and length, and the desire to make the batsman play every ball.

Trained as a mechanical engineer, Anil discovered early the virtues of precision and accuracy, which he has put to telling effect on the field.

Luckily for India, he opted to pursue a career in cricket with equal zest. ...

Never termed a classical leg-spinner (primarily because he is not a huge turner of the ball) in the real sense of the word, Anil has proved in his 15 long years in international cricket, that his style was equally effective. With a clever mix of top-spinners, googlies, leg-breaks, flight and a variation of pace, he has outwitted many a batsman. Facing a vary tall spinner, hurling deliveries at short of medium-pace, with every ball on target, can be a very daunting task. As his record suggests, he has won many leg-before-wickets by fooling many batsmen into playing across the line.

The mid-nineties saw the emergence of Anil Kumble as a mature strike bowler. ...

The Pursuit of Happiness

The Pursuit of Happiness

Recently I had an article rejected by a literary magazine. It had been critiqued by a "reader" who gave three main reasons for the rejection. The reasons, which were factual, were completely wrong, and I could document the mistakes. I called the senior editor, who didn't return the call. Over the next week, I left several messages which weren't returned. Needless to say, it was extremely frustrating, knowing I was right, but knowing there wasn't anything I could do about it. A week later, I got an email from the editor, apologizing, and he gave me a satisfactory reason why he didn't return the calls or emails. He invited me to send him whatever documents I thought were relevant, and he would indeed give me consideration. Now, I had a completely different outlook. Whether they ever accept the article for publication is no longer a source of frustration. The fact is I'm getting the opportunity to have input in the process. I believe this "input in the process" is the key to the happiness of our society.

Happiness Helps People Stay Healthy

Happiness Helps People Stay Healthy

People who are happier in their daily lives have healthier levels of key body chemicals than those who muster few positive feelings, a new study suggests. This means happier people may have healthier hearts and cardiovascular systems, possibly cutting their risk of diseases like diabetes.

Previous studies have shown that depression is associated with health problems compared to average emotional states. But few studies have looked at the effects of positive moods on health. Now, researchers at University College London, UK, have linked everyday happiness with healthier levels of important body chemicals, such as the stress hormone cortisol.

“This study showed that whether people are happy or less happy in their everyday lives appears to have important effects on the markers of biological function known to be associated with disease,” says clinical psychologist Jane Wardle, one of the research team. “Perhaps laughter is the best medicine,” she adds. ...

Happy Feet

The pulsating beat of the song "Paranoia" fills the room. Homer-Center High School senior Michael Pavolko and junior Breanne Skultety focus intently on the TV screen, stepping so rapidly in unison that it looks as though they've been practicing a highly choreographed dance routine for months.

Their bodies are moving. Their feet are a blur.

They're playing a video game.

The main goal is fun, but fitness is a welcome "side effect" of games like Konami's "Dance Dance Revolution," known to players as DDR. Such action-packed, interactive pastimes have captured the interest of teens, who don't always find traditional workout routines appealing. ...

Bush ... This ... !?!

The Times of London:

In person Mr Bush is so far removed from the caricature of the dim, war-mongering Texas cowboy of global popular repute that it shakes one’s faith in the reliability of the modern media.

Apparently the President was able intermittently to pronounce, in grammatical phrases, without prompting, words such as clandestinely, admonition, and objective. Who knew?

Happy India!

Ability to enjoy and cherish simple pleasures in life keep the Indians' happiness quotient high. - SMITA PYLEE

Image

GRIN WITH GLEE Come together, do the wave, we are the fourth happiest people on the planet

We beat the Brits to it. The Aussies just about inched ahead of us and the Pakistanis were nowhere in sight. Or so says one survey. No, this poll did not gauge national virility, gossip or even corruption. Happily, it was about happiness. Bharat maa ke laadle surprised themselves by galloping into the fourth position. Top slots are nothing new to us. We have been there, seen all - for pollution, porn et al. But, happiness... Many eyebrows still stay raised.

But there are optimistic souls around, who believe that Indians were always happy. In short, if we did not figure in the list earlier, it was sheer statistical anomaly. ...

We are Mumbaikars ...

by HH » Thu Jul 13, 2006 4:56 pm

We are Mumbaikars ...

That's the spirit!! We are Mumbaikars , we dust ourselves and get up !!!

Dear Terrorist,

( Please forward this to others. U never know by chance it may come to hands of a terrorist and he can then read this message which is specially meant for him!!! )

Even if you are not reading this we don't care. Time and again you tried to disturb us and disrupt our life - killing innocent civilians by planting bombs in trains, buses and cars. You have tried hard to bring death and destruction, cause panic and fear and create communal disharmony but every time you were disgustingly unsuccessful. Do you know how we pass our life in Mumbai? How much it takes for us to earn that single rupee? If you wanted to give us a shock then we are sorry to say that you failed miserably in your ulterior motives. Better look elsewhere, not here.

We are not Hindus and Muslims or Gujaratis and Marathis or Punjabis and Bengaliies. Nor do we distinguish ourselves as owners or workers, govt. employees or private employees. WE ARE MUMBAIKERS (Bombay-ites, if you like). We will not allow you to disrupt our life like this. On the last few occasions when you struck (including the 7 deadly blasts in a single day killing over 250 people and injuring 500+ in 1993), we went to work next day in full strength. This time we cleared everything within a few hours and were back to normal - the vendors placing their next order, businessmen finalizing the next deals and the office workers rushing to catch the next train. (Yes the same train you targeted)

Fathom this: Within 3 hours of the blasts, long queues of blood donating volunteers were seen outside various hospitals, where most of the injured were admitted. By 12 midnight, the hospital had to issue a notification that blood banks were full and they didn't require any more blood. The next day, attendance at schools and office was close to 100%, trains & buses were packed to the brim, and the crowds were back.

The city has simply dusted itself off and moved on - perhaps with greater vigor.

We are Mumbaikers and we live like brothers in times like this. So, do not dare to threaten us with your crackers. The spirit of Mumbai is very strong and can not be harmed.

With Love,
From the PEOPLE***** of Mumbai (Bombay)

Salaam Bombay!

by HH » Fri Jul 14, 2006 9:00 am

Salaam Bombay!

Friends,
As i was sipping my morning coffee in my daughter's home at
Chicago on 11th morning i caught the first flash news on Aajtak
about the first blast & the rest followed.I felt very bad , very
angry & very sad that innocent people getting back home after a
day's hard work were killed and wounded for no fault of theirs ,
only because they are indians like you & me.
I followed closely how quickly Bombay got back to it's feet and
normalcy and that really made me proud to be an indian. People
here (who know about it)are simply amazed at Mumbaikars and their
response. The rest of india and politicians in particular should
take a leaf or two from Mumbai. But what is disturbing is that it
took the government machinery quite some time to respond to the
emergency.
We all pray for the souls of those departed , for speedy recovery
of the injured.

Bombay (Mumbai), we salute you

Happiest Day of 2006

by HH » Sun Jul 16, 2006 8:46 pm

Today, Friday, June 23, is the Happiest Day of 2006.

Cliff Arnall, the psychologist in Wales, is noted for happiest-day pronouncements ... He says that fond memories of childhood summers are a key to human happiness.

But he doesn't just look at the calendar and pick a likely date (the first Friday of summer, for instance). He uses a scientific formula: O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He.

As he explains it, O stands for being outdoors and outdoor activity, N for nature, S for social interaction, Cpm for childhood summers and positive memories, T for temperature and He for holidays and looking forward to time off.

When he crunched the numbers in 2005, the happiest day turned out to be the first Friday of summer. In 2006, same story. ...

Family - Have A Nice Day, Kindly Rejoice!

by HH » Thu Aug 24, 2006 10:34 am

F A M I L Y

I ran into a stranger as he passed by, "Oh excuse me please" was my reply.
He said, "Please excuse me too; I wasn't watching for you."
We were very polite, this stranger and I. ! We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told, How we treat our loved ones, young and old.
Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My son stood beside me very still.
When I turned, I nearly knocked him down. "Move out of the way," I said with a frown.
He walked away, his little heart broken. I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed, God's still small voice came to me and said,
"While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use, but the family you love, you seem to abuse.
Go and look on the kitchen floor, You'll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you. He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.
He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise, you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."
By this time, I felt very small, And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed; "Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.
"Are these the flowers you picked for me?" He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.
I picked 'em because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."

I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."
He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay. I love you anyway."
I said, "Son, I love you too, and I do l ike the flowers, especially the blue."

FAMILY

Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in
a matter of days. But the family we left behind will feel the loss ! for the rest of their lives.
And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family,
an unwise investment indeed, don't you think?

Do you know what the word FAMILY means?
