How appaling "Katrina" pe koi discussion nahi.

Disaster of this propotion and no talk on our DB on that. Not good.

What has happened is truly tragic and the globe needs to empathise with the people of New Orleans and other places.

A few questions that I find quizzing are

1. Has the US walled itself off.

2. Has the US foreign policy aleinated it from the rest of the world.

3. Is racism that big a player within US.

It takes 5 days for a Nuclear super power to go to the rescue of its citizens ?

4. Why was the reaction so slow. Why were 10s of thousands left to die.

5. Why was't a SOS raised if you were not capable of handling such a scenario. Countries like India can definattely help. We have trained people who are prone to handling tragdies at this magnitude.

6. A query that crosse every sane mind, how long will your arrogance continue? You are responsible of killing 100s of thousands in other parts of the world, you sit with contempt when 10s of thousnads of your own die. What are you trying to acheive "The Liberal Party Of the US"

Vada-Pav vs Katrina Chaos

by HH » Wed Sep 07, 2005 5:59 pm

Vada-Pav vs Katrina Chaos

MUMBAI *****: In New Orleans there was shooting and looting when the floods came last week. When a similar inundation struck Mumbai a month earlier, there was no violence, just free vada-pav.

Residents say street vendors passed out the vadapav to their fellow citizens wading through waist-high water in a sign that the disaster brought the city together rather than tearing it apart as appeared to happen in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

The response seems to symbolise what South Asians say is the region’s familiarity with, and resilience in the face of, numerous natural calamities.

"What we are seeing in USA is complete chaos," said Farida Lambe, vicepresident of the Nirmala Niketan

College of Social Work which helped in relief and rehabilitation work during the Mumbai floods.

"My assessment is that many of the problems arose as the people are not used to facing calamities. They expect complete efficiency and find it difficult to cope if it does not come about."

Mumbai police commissioner AN Roy confirmed there were no cases of looting, arson or violence when the floods hit.

"Even stray cases of robbery were not heard or reported," he said.

India has regularly faced natural disasters from earthquakes, storms and floods during monsoon. As a result, it has developed rapid responses for shelter and relief that while not wholly successful for long-term rehabilitation, have enabled them to handle immediate needs quickly.

My thoughts on this...

US is a well developed country, everything is automated here working on electricity, communications & transportation. Katrina is a situation where all of these failed and US has no clue to face such a consequence.

The whole new orleans is below sea level (wut abt mumbai ?) and the entire place is sub merged in water, so its rescuing is indeed a very tough job. May be tougher than mumbai situation. US had gained a kind of confidence with its past successes that no natural disaster can bring deaths in large numbers. Katrina proved them wrong.

On getting help from navy, pbbly it took them time to call back all those ships deployed at other country borders, phew!

we have already donated money. we have also offered doctors n medicines...dunno if they have been accepted...

a big portion of mumbai is on land reclaimed from sea, without protection of any dykes...the danger is everpresent every monsoon.

confidence? i call it 'arrogance', the such-things-cant-happen-here mentality...
kk wrote:On getting help from navy, pbbly it took them time to call back all those ships deployed at other country borders
that has alreayd started in a small way...many regiments were called back. i hope all the troops are called back to clean their own backyard first.

Our news channels have done a gr8 job in not showing ne pictures of the distruction happening over there. compare that to there coverage of even a small accident in india.

hey don't take it personally but think of it as a friendly advice....

Firstly, think twice, maybe thrice before posting.Evaluate whether the post will be any meaningful in the context of the board.and try NOT to think about post count Boosting.

I know all of us hanker after PC & PC++ and all that stuff, but it really does'nt matter. After all, you're as good as your last post.So PC is a mere number and is jus' a parameter to get the ratings thatz all.And on a good Discussion board, mere numbers do not matter that much.Quality matters more than Quantity.

So try not to make posts just to increase ur PC.If u indeed like that, there are 'Dedicated' threads for them.Post in them and no one'll notice it much.

And in case when you don't know a thing, think again before asking.Normally we aren't averse to answering n00bs' queries, but sometimes silly queries can be a PITA.(PITA=Pain in the a$$ )

There is a treasure trove of info out there on Google. You just have to ask for it.And in case of genuine dougts or clarifications, don't hesitate to PM any of us.We'll be more than glad to help you out.

And try to avoid single n silly posts like "y?";"haha Good One";" ";"thanx for the info";"wat is that?" etc etc.I know that they can be handy at times but an overdose of t will really kill the fun.

So thatz ur lesson for the day :P Next lesson in maybe a week's time.Meanwhile try to implement this and see how you can be a different person on the boards.

You know what? This time I actually agree with every word in CAD's post. What is happening? God and Devil in agreement? Bhai log apni apni potli baandh lo aur patli gali se kat lo. Ab koi bharosa nahi. :D

That said, I don't see much point in harping again what CAD put so eloquently. Except, being the devil, I have to put this keeda in people's minds. Was what happened in the aftermath of Katrina not an oversight but deliberation on the part of the Bush administration? How else do you explain arson, rap, loot, and violence to go unabated for over 48 hours? And to top that, it takes the 'most developed' nation in the world to send in rescue and relief more time than it takes India to lose a test match?

I think Bush had a racist/regional bone to pick with the people of New Orleans. May be they did not invest in his oil companies. Or may be he is just a plain sadistic son of a bitch.

Some Balm ... Katrina Suffering Helper "Nurse"

by HH » Tue Sep 13, 2005 4:54 pm

Some Balm - Dorothy Day - "On Pilgrimage"
If I did not believe, if I did not make what is called an act of faith (and each act of faith increases our capacity for faith), if I did not have faith that the works of mercy do lighten the sum total of suffering in the world, so that those who are suffering in this ghastly struggle somehow mysteriously find their pain lifted and some balm of consolation poured on their wounds — if I did not believe these things, the problem of evil would indeed be overwhelming.

Letters Of Angie Merchant - Katrina Suffering Helper "Nurse":
