Advani Resigns ...

NEW DELHI: (PTI) Following is the text of L K Advani's resignation letter as BJP President, addressed to party General Secretary Sanjay Joshi.

"My dear Sanjayji,

I am writing this letter just before departing from Karachi.

I have decided to request the party to relieve me of presidentship. I am sure acceding to my request would be in the best interests of the great cause I have served all my life, as also of the party which has given me so much.

I have taken this decision after pondering the matter very carefully. And I believe that my visit to Pakistan last week has immensely reinforced the initiatives taken by the NDA government to bring about peace and normalcy with Pakistan. I have not said or done anything in Pakistan which I need to retract or review."

BJP Rejects Advani's Resignation, Leader To Reconsider Decision ...

New Delhi, June 8 (PTI) Grappling with the leadership crisis, BJP top brass today closed ranks behind L K Advani urging him to withdraw his resignation as party President on which he will give his decision tomorrow.
In the face of a strong RSS reaction to Advani's praise for Mohmmed Ali Jinnah and other statements in Pakistan no no BJP leader had rallied to his defence till its Parliamentary Board met here this evening and passed a resolution rejecting his resignation and urged him to continue to lead the party.

However, interestingly the resolution passed at the Parliamenting Board refrained from making any refernece to the controversial remarks on Jinnah that had attracted the RSS ire.

As Advani ruled out reconsidering his decision to quit, party Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu presided over a meeting of the Parliamentary Board and central office bearers which was attended by the top brass including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. PTI

Press Sense - 9 / 6 / 05 : Thai Teenager Gives Birth At 140 KMPH

Thai Teenager Gives Birth At 140 KMPH Thu Jun 9, 2005

BANGKOK (Reuters) - An 18-year-old Thai gave birth in the passenger seat of a Mercedes Benz which was doing 140 km per hour (85 mph) to try to get her to hospital in time, The Nation newspaper reported on Thursday.

Juthamas Srimongkol, who was only seven months pregnant when she went into labor on Wednesday, was rushed to hospital in her father-in-law's luxury saloon, but delivered a son 19 km (12 miles) short of their destination, the newspaper said.

Mother-in-law Jimhaeng sae Iab, 47, leapt into the car's front seat when she heard a "splitting noise," but discovered she was too late.

"The baby had already come out. I held him and cleaned his body but could not cut his umbilical cord because we didn't have any equipment," she was quoted as saying.

Demonstrating remarkable calm behind the wheel, her husband offered soothing words throughout the high-speed ordeal in Khon Kaen in northeast Thailand.

"When the baby came out, he continued offering moral support to our daughter-in-law," Jimhiang said. "He kept telling us how much closer we were to getting to the hospital."

Doctors said both mother and baby, who weighed in at 1.8 kg (4 lb), were safe although they would be kept in hospital for around two weeks.

NOVEL EXPERIMENT: The 'School On Boat' with Children.

RAJAHMUNDRY: A novel idea -- school on a fishing boat -- to educate children of poor fisher folk in the Godavari backwaters is a success story and the Ministry of HRD is sending a team to take this innovative idea to other parts of the country where most of the out of school children and dropouts are from the fishing community.

East Godavari district, which stood first in the country with its impressive performance in `Sarva Siksha Abhiyan' (SSA) has set another record by successfully running the `school on boat' programme, which got applause from the Ministry of Human Resource Development ...

R.K. Laxman's The Best of Laxman : The Common Man Seeks Justice : You Said It - Common Man's Byline

By far the most enduring aspect of TOI in fast changing times, Laxman's common man has kick-started the day for regular subscribers of the daily for years on end. Despite being packed into a corner, the daily dose of "You Said It" invariably packs a punch that is far more effective than all the words put together. Penguin India now brings up the tenth in The Best of Laxman series; a collection of 200 cartoons in which the country's best-known political cartoonist comments on the rampant injustice that is part and parcel of Indian coexistence.

Press Sense - 16 / 6 / 05 : Congress T-Stance Irks TRS

Congress T-stance Irks TRS
Hyderabad, June 15: With the Congress still refusing to speak its mind on the separate Telangana issue, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti has started sending feelers to the BJP to muster support for its cause. Though the Congress Working Committee had passed a resolution in October 2001 demanding smaller States, it has not said much about it afterwards.

The TRS leaders met former Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, on Tuesday, and were pleasantly surprised when he reacted positively to their demand. Mr Vajpayee reportedly told them Telangana should have been formed long time back.
On Wednesday, they met the BJP president L.K. Advani to present him literature and CDs explaining the background of the agitation for a separate Telangana.
The TRS has so far mustered the support of 19 parties for its cause, but could not wrest any concrete opinion from the Congress.

Several Congress leaders including Mr Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy and Mr G. Venkatswamy, had asserted that the party stood by the CWC resolution which demanded a second states reorganisation commission to form smaller states. However, the fact remains that the party has not officially communicated this to the three-member sub-committee, headed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, which is looking into the Telangana demand. “The CWC resolution was adopted when the Congress was in the wilderness,” said a TRS leader. “Now, it is leading a coalition government and therefore, it is not too enthusiastic about the old resolution. Its stance is confusing,” he said.

The BJP leaders told TRS counterparts that there was no need for the opposition to clarify its stance before the Congress did it. At present, the TRS leaders are pinning their hopes on a positive report from the Pranab Mukherjee Committee. “If Mrs Sonia Gandhi is amenable to granting statehood to Telangana, everbody will fall in line,” a TRS MP said.

The TRS leaders are under tremendous pressure from Maoists who have warned them not to continue their alliance with the Congress. They are also worried about the emergence of actress Vijayashanti, who is dema-nding a separate Telangana State. Some TRS leaders feel that the Maoist threat will prevent them from campaigning in the municipal polls.

Press Sense - 18 / 6 / 05 : Airbus, Boeing Start Work On Firming Paris Deals

Airbus, Boeing Start Work On Firming Paris Deals : Fri Jun 17, 2005
LONDON (Reuters) - In the United States big is normally best, and in Europe small is normally beautiful.

At the Paris Air Show, however, it has been the Europeans who have been thinking big.

At the biennial jamboree for aerospace executives and plane enthusiasts, the public on Friday got their closest look yet at the European-made, double-decker Airbus A380, which is set to eclipse the Boeing Co. 747 jumbo as the world's biggest airliner.

Meanwhile, executives from Airbus and Boeing were packing their bags to start work on finalizing the bulk of the $50 billion or so in plane deals they announced this week.

Airbus announced deals for 280 planes worth more than $33 billion at list prices, yet only orders for 10 planes appeared to be firm, with the rest to be finalized in coming weeks, months or years.

Most deals do firm up, and Airbus might see a stack of them do so around September, when it hopes to formally launch its mid-sized A350 model. Customers announced plans to buy up to 95 of the planes this week.

Boeing announced about half as many plane deals as Airbus, though far more firm orders, for 88 planes.

The epitome of big corporate America, the largest U.S. manufacturing exporter was content to sign deals for mostly smaller planes, especially the 737.

It did not add new buyers for its new mid-sized 787 due in 2008, but it has sold out of the planes until the end of 2010 and has more than 100 tentative orders in the works.

That is helping Boeing in a bid to top Airbus in commercial jet orders this year for the first time since 2000 ...

Boeing shares are at four-year highs.

Top Airbus salesman John Leahy said, however, the France-based planemaker was not about to give up its lead in orders without a fight.

"We outsold them in every year since 2000 and intend to do so this year," he said.

Press Sense - 19 / 6 / 05 : A Hindu Wrote Pakistan's First National Anthem

A Hindu Wrote Pakistan's First National Anthem : Sunday, Jun 19, 2005
JAMMU:

"Aey sarzameen-i-pak Zarrey terey hein aaj sitaron sey tabnak Roshan heh kehkashan sey kahin aaj teri khak."

"Oh land of Pakistan, each particle of yours is being illuminated by stars. Even your dust has been brightened like a rainbow."'

These are lines from Pakistan's first national anthem — written by Jagannath Azad, a Lahore-based Hindu, acceding to the wishes of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the country's founder and first Governor-General.

As the debate about Jinnah's secular August 1947 vision of his country rages on, this little known fact will be of public interest. Days before his death last year, Azad recalled, in an interview ...
"... On the morning of August 9, 1947, there was a message from Pakistan's first Governor-General, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. It was through a friend working in Radio Lahore who called me to his office. He told me `Quaid-e-Azam wants you to write a national anthem for Pakistan.' ... Even I was surprised when my colleagues in Radio Pakistan, Lahore approached me. I asked them why Jinnah Sahib wanted me to write the anthem. They confided in me that `Quaid-e-Azam wanted the anthem to be written by an Urdu-knowing Hindu.' Through this, I believe Jinnah Sahib wanted to sow the roots of secularism in a Pakistan where intolerance had no place."
The national anthem written by Jagannath Azad was sent to Jinnah, who approved it in a few hours. It was sung for the first time on Pakistan Radio, Karachi (which was then the capital of Pakistan). ...

The song written by Jagannath Azad served as Pakistan's national anthem for a year and a half. After Jinnah's death, a song written by the Urdu poet Hafiz Jallundhari was chosen as the national anthem.

Press Sense - 20 / 6 / 05 : FM Rainbow ... Monday Moods, Tuesday Tunes ... Friday Fries!

FM Rainbow ... Monday Moods, Tuesday Tunes ... Friday Fries!

Good old AIR FM 101.3 has increased its hours devoted to Western non-classical music to four hours a day. This is part of FM Rainbow, which includes other interactive programmes such as Monday Moods, Tuesday Tunes (there's even a Friday Fries!), and so on. For its programmes christened Fire 101 (12 to 1 p.m.), Wind 101 (5 to 7 p.m.), and Space 101 (10 to 11 p.m.), AIR has picked some 20 bright young people as RJs who are bilingual, if not trilingual, and who enjoy a certain degree of flexibility when it comes to form and content.

But it's not as if anything goes. As Station Director G. Jayalal emphasises: "We impose reasonable restrictions because AIR FM is for family listening. We keep in mind every segment of society and every age group. Our listeners are not teenagers alone." Assistant Station Director H.S. Saraswati chips in: "We're strong on local culture. We have our roots here. That is our strength." And both laugh gleefully, saying: "Our competition is closely watching us. And sometimes even copy our programmes. Yes, there is healthy competition."

The change comes in the wake of mass defection of listeners enamoured of youthful prattle on other channels. But AIR FM ("We're actually younger than our competition. We took off only on September 1, 2001.") is fighting back, wooing lost audiences. It is in a strong position. It has solid institutional backing and no problems when it comes to royalty and copyright issues. "We have signed agreements with music companies and our RJs are allowed to air music marketed only by those companies," says Mr. Jayalal. AIR FM is also meticulous about paying royalties, so there's no question of hassles like lawsuits.

"Not only do we have phone-ins, but also phone-outs," says Ms. Saraswati. "Listeners call us. We call them. They can also SMS us. And to keep the programmes fresh, our RJs don't get more than six assignments a month each."

Press Sense - 25 / 6 / 05 : Development Threatens Malaysia's Mangroves

Development Threatens Malaysia's Mangroves - Fri Jun 24, 2005

KUALA SELANGOR, Malaysia (Reuters) - It's a lucky person who gets to see a Great Tit bird.

The dark green and yellow Great Tit (Parus major) is a species that makes its home in Malaysia's coastal mangrove swamps and both are disappearing as the country redoubles it attempts to boost agriculture.

Commercial farmers are turning swamps in Kuala Selangor, 56 miles northwest of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, into shrimp farms and threatening a delicate ecosystem that is home to hundreds of species, environmentalists say.

Wood and marine products from the swamps provide a source of income for villagers and the swamps themselves form a natural protective buffer against rough seas or tsunamis, like the one that struck parts of peninsular Malaysia last December.

"Directly and indirectly, the mangrove swamp has, for thousands of years, protected us in one form or another," said Andrew Sebastian, parks director of conservation group Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).

"The tsunami has shown how important the mangrove swamps are for the ecosystem and our lives."

The swamps shielded several Indonesian islands and Malaysia's northwest coastline from the worst effects of the tsunami, prompting Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to call for their preservation.

"Mangroves should not be touched, they act as a barrier for big waves...they break the waves," Abdullah said.

SWAMP TO FARM

Despite Abdullah's directive, a 5-mile stretch of mangrove forest was turned into a shrimp farm in Kuala Selangor early this year ...

It's Not So Much The Heat, It's The Snakes... Fri Jul 1, 2005

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A Dutch woman discovered a 1.5 meter (5 foot) long rat snake on her porch Thursday, part of a seasonal movement of slithering reptiles charmed from their lairs by rising temperatures.

"It happens each summer, especially when it gets hot ... When you have nice weather, you get this. They become more active," said Pieter Smit, manager of the vet ambulance service in the Hague that took away the snake.

"We have had eight or nine reports already this summer. Some are on the street and we found one inside a (double) ceiling."

Temperatures in Amsterdam this month have hit 32.9 degrees Celsius (91.04 F) with temperatures hitting a record 34.3 elsewhere in the country as it experienced its first June heatwave since 1976.

The yellow and white snake discovered Thursday was harmless and in all likelihood escaped from its terrarium.

"She was not intimidated by the unexpected find and trapped it under a bucket. The snake had been spotted earlier in the area ... but we could not catch it," a police spokesman said.

A Real Nightmare... Wed Jul 6, 2005

LONDON (Reuters) - A teenage sleepwalker was rescued after being found fast asleep 130 feet up on the arm of a crane, police said Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to a building site in London after a passer-by spotted the 15-year-old girl curled up on top of a concrete counterweight high above the ground.

The teen-ager, who has not been named, had climbed up the crane and walked across a narrow metal beam while fast asleep during the incident, which happened on June 25.

It is believed the teen-ager had walked out unnoticed from her home near the site in Dulwich, southeast London.

She was brought down in a hydraulic lift after a two-hour rescue operation.

"Police and London Fire Brigade attended and the woman was brought down from the crane at around 4 a.m. and taken to hospital for precautionary checks," a police spokeswoman said.

The girl was unharmed and later went home.

Press Sense - 8 / 7 / 05 : Day After ‘witch,’ Bush Quotes Mrs G

Day After ‘witch,’ Bush Quotes Mrs G Friday, July 01, 2005

NEW DELHI, JUNE 30: Less than 24 hours after the news media flashed around the world late American President Richard Nixon’s remarks in November 1971 deriding Indira Gandhi as a “witch”, President George W. Bush quoted the former Indian Prime Minister approvingly in a speech today.

In an address focused on American initiatives towards African development at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, Bush cited Indira Gandhi as saying “poverty and underdevelopment are the biggest polluters.’’
...
Speechwriting is pretty serious business in the White House and quotes do not appear randomly, they say. And surely, Indira Gandhi is not among the most quoted former leaders of the world.

Bush’s decision to quote her is being seen here as a pre-emptive strike to distance himself from Nixon, whose drunken vituperation is now a notorious part of American presidential history.

Press Sense - 13 / 7 / 05 : McDonald Pays Up Hindu Veggie Groups in US.

McDonald Pays Up Hindu Veggie Groups in US TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2005

WASHINGTON: Several Hindu and vegetarian groups in the United States had a happy surprise in the mail last week.

Healthy cheques for sums ranging from $50,000 to $1.4 million -- part of the $10 million court-ordered settlement in the case involving their beef against McDonald's.

Some four years after Seattle-based Indian-American lawyer Harish Bharti sued the fast food giant for misleading customers by claiming their French fries were vegetarian, McDonald's mailed out the cheques, in addition to the apology it issued in March 2002.

The money, McDonald's said, will go "to Hindu, vegetarian and other groups whose charitable and educational activities are closely linked to the concerns of these consumers (having dietary restrictions)."

Drive-Through Robber Gets Bank Loot Wed Jul 13, 2005

CHICAGO (Reuters) - That was easy.

A bank robber behind the wheel of his car on Tuesday sent a note through a vacuum tube to the teller at the drive-through window at a branch of Chicago's LaSalle Bank and the teller obliged, returning an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The exchange was completed through the bank's pneumatic tube communications system, in which canisters are passed back and forth between motorist and teller.

The FBI said it was investigating the drive-through theft.

Press Sense - 16 / 7 / 05 : Cell Phone Saves Immigrants Lost In Desert

Cell Phone Saves Immigrants Lost In Desert Fri Jul 15, 2005

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A group of stranded illegal immigrants facing death in the parched Arizona desert saved themselves by using a cell phone they found to call rescue services, the U.S. Border Patrol said Thursday.

The group got lost in the desert near Arivaca, south of Tucson, Arizona, Wednesday after their guide abandoned them during a four-day trek across the border from Mexico.

Lost and low on water, they used a cell phone they found in their guide's bag to dial 911. Rescuers dispatched helicopters and located the group in the desert shortly after sunset.

"Their quick thinking in using the phone to call for help and lighting signal fires saved their lives," the Tucson Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol said in a news release.

Since the beginning of July, 21 illegal immigrants have died of heat exhaustion while crossing through the desert to Arizona, where summer temperatures soar to highs of around 120 F (49 C).

The sun-baked state is the principal route used by mostly Mexican immigrants seeking a new life in the United States. Last year, more than half a million were arrested there.

The Border Patrol said Thursday there was a strong possibility that a heatwave in Arizona could cause a record number of immigrant deaths.

Press Sense - 21 / 7 / 05 : N-Deal a Win-Win for India, says Singh

N-Deal a Win-Win for India, says Singht ndo-US: ‘Will end isolation, national security factored, pact not directed against Pak, China’
WASHINGTON, JULY 20: Despite the political criticism at home of the historic nuclear pact he concluded with the US this week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he was confident that a strong national consensus will emerge once the immense gains from it are fully understood.

# ‘‘While competitive parliamentary politics sometimes diverts attention from national goals,’’ Singh said he ‘‘had full faith in the inherent patriotism of all sections of our country’’.

Error makes bride wed groom’s kin

Lucknow, July 20: She was to marry the elder brother but, due to an error by the maulvi, she has ended up marrying the younger brother. Both families are now in a quandary while the bride faces an uncertain future. According to sources, a wedding took place in the family of one Abbas (all names have been changed on request) on July 15 at Mahrauda village in Mauaima, in Allahabad district. Abbas’ daughter Shirin was to marry Seraj, the elder son of Mohammed Saeed of Udiadeeh village, in Mandhata police circle, Pratapgarh district.

The baraat arrived at the bride’s residence on July 15 and Seraj was dressed up as the groom. The nikahnama prepared for the couple, however, inadvertently mentioned the name of Meraj, who is the groom’s younger brother. The maulvi who performed the nikah read out the name of Meraj during the rituals and the bride, who was apparently in a fluster, agreed to the marriage.

The maulvi then went to the actual groom Seraj, who also accepted the conditions in the nikahnama, and the marriage was performed without anyone realising the error.
When the bride and the groom reached the groom’s village in Pratapgarh a day later, a relative who happened to read the nikahnama pointed out the error. The bride was questioned and she also said that she had accepted her marriage to Meraj. She was apparently not too sure whether her groom was Seraj, or Meraj.

The groom’s family was placed in a piquant situation. The bride had accepted the marriage to the younger brother while it was the elder brother who had accepted the marriage. Till the matter is resolved, the bride has been sent back to her parents’ home in Allahabad and the groom’s family has now sought a fatwa from the Darul-Uloom Deoband.

However, sources said that after the controversy over the Imrana case, the mufti at Deoband has politely declined to issue a fatwa in this case. He added that as of now, both families faced a dilemma: the marriage between the younger brother and the girl had not been solemnised because the younger brother never accepted the marriage; and the one between the elder brother and the bride was also not formalised because the bride had accepted the younger brother in the ritual. Besides, the nikahnama did not carry the elder brother’s name.

Press Sense - 22 / 7 / 05 : PM Thanks India's Five Who Made Mission Possible

PM Thanks India's Five Who Made Mission Possible

GENEVA, July 22: As he prepared to leave Washington on Thursday night after a visit that exceeded all expectations, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called in his delegation to commend all those who had worked behind the nuclear pact with the United States.

That gesture from Singh, on the eve of his return via a brief halt in Switzerland, recognised at once the historic nature of the pact and the intensity of the negotiations with the Bush Administration and within the Indian system itself.

Anil Kakodkar, the head of the Atomic Energy establishment, who brought in much-needed technical clarity to the Indian negotiating position, held the key to achieving the twin objectives—sustaining India’s nuclear arsenal and acquiring civilian nuclear technology.

But there were five other men, who had to handle the complex political and diplomatic dimensions of India’s nuclear policy and contributed to the talks which went right down to the wire:

* K Natwar Singh, External Affairs Minister
* Ronnen Sen, Indian Ambassador to the US
* Shyam Saran, Foreign Secretary
* M K Narayanan, National Security Advisor
* S Jaishankar, Joint Secretary (Americas) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Prime Minister Thanked All!
