pronunciations

by mark » Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:06 am

hey, not sure if anything like this has been done before, but:

since i was small i learned most of my vocab through books, so a lot of the time i have no idea how to pronounce certain words and names..

for example, I read a Famous Five book when i was 5 and the next day i said something was picturesque to my mum, assuming it was pronounced picture-es-Q. naturally my mother beat the sh1te out of me for being so stupid, and i didn't talk for 3 months..

Example two: I know Don Quixote, by Cervantes is considered to be the first ever novel, but i haven't a clue how to pronounce either the name of the book, or the author. I'd ask my mum but i don't want to risk another thrashing followed by another period of autism-like silence.

Anyhow i'll get it started, in addition to example 2 above (i'll never make the same mistake again with words ending in 'que') how does one pronounce "Sartre", as in Jean-Paul?

Firstly,Welcome mark.....hows life?

secondly, hats off to ur imagination man...ur ideas of new threads have to be patented :P

Thirdly,I think Don Quixote is pronounced as Don Kwix-Oat or mebbe with the T sound silent...

Cervantes is pronoucned as Ser-van-tay but thatz jus' a guess....

And coming to ur last point, all my life i used to think that 'Jean' is pronounced as "Gene" as in Jeans....but when Van Damme's name being pronounced as

"Jon Claudde Van Damme" i came to know that "jean" is pronouced as "jon" (with the N being as faint as possible)

Same's the case wth Sean Penn.....I thot Sean a la Bean...but in reality it is "Shaun" :? :?

I recently came across Mephistopheles....anyone have an ide abt how to pronouce it??

so yea.. disguise. .and my name.. mark still cant say it :D ..

all i can think of now... man.. fkin hate thinkin bout useless things.. nd then takin the time out to talk bout em.. godd.. shall go marinate my fingers for this stupidity...

welcome back mark!!! :D

french isnt it? French is the worst as far as pronunciation is concerned...u never pronounce the way u spell...u can confidently snip of the last letter/syllable while pronouncing french words...so "Sartre" must be just "Sart"
similarly Jean is "Jon" (with a nasal sounding "n" - think how Kumar Sanu wud pronounce it...:D ) etc etc

English A Phunny Language!

by J Quader18 » Wed Sep 14, 2005 6:53 pm

Pronounciation of some ingilees words is certainly a different game today with each one having his own style. A few months before I was confused with the word 'Rouge' which I pronounced as rooj (by 1st listening on MTV) n said the same to one of my friends who burst out laughin' n kinda embarrassed me then  but besides one word having two meanings has embarrassed me even more than the pronounciations of words . Nevertheless, the most annoying is the often use of slang all over the world these days!

well, the bottom line here is ENGLISH is certainly a confusing language!

Rouge is pronounced similar to how you've spelt it there, except the j is very soft. can't think of a soft j example from english..

another frenchy one, the US city Des Moines, anyone know how to sucessfully pronounce it?

Day (with a short period on the 'ay') Mo-yin (say this fast, it slightly resembles the name MOIN)

Anyone who has lived in Chicago would know how to pronounce this one.

Oops, I made a typo. Its NGUYEN, not Nyugen.

Yes, it is pronounced as WIN or QUEN; for the Vietnamese, both probably sound the same, just as the way Chinese substitute R for L if a vowel precedes the R.

I know this one!

In African origin names, the first letter is silent and so are W's and the other odd letter clumped together, like GWA or GNU etc. So this one would be:

pam-aleo bang-a (more like wa in the end, but say it really fast)

Yes, it is pronounced as WIN or QUEN; for the Vietnamese, both probably sound the same, just as the way Chinese substitute R for L if a vowel precedes the R.
the "QUA" sound of those names are for western convenience. its actually the nasal "GNA" sorta sound - same as the sound of the last consonant in Telugu or Hindi series: Ka-Kha-Ga-Gha-GNA. (same as sanskrit GYAN is sometimes written as "GNAN")

that sound cant be prononced by westerners and it has become "QUAN".

a similar analogy is the Tamil/Malayalam sound that is written as "ZHA" in English (ex-the 'K' in DMK: Kazhagam). its no way pronounced as its written in English.
