Theories of evolution

by Aishwarya » Thu Mar 24, 2005 10:48 pm

Well I have couple of theories....

First one is about if chicken came first or the egg!

Assumpitions and Axioms:

1.Complexity of an organism depends on the number of processes occuring parallely in the organism.

2.Increase in the complexity of the organism is one of the characteristic features of evolution.Meaning, a species is said to be more evolved than the other if it is more complex than the latter.

Okay, now we all agree to the fact that there are fewer processes occuring in a unicellular organism compared to a multicellular organism. Therefore,a multicellular organism is more complex and came later.Continuing the argument further,an egg has fewer processes occuring inside it than a chicken. Why? For example take for instance the fact that an egg deosnt have limbs, therefore doesnt have to walk, therefore the brain doesnt have to send commands/signals to the limb since there are no limbs or they are in their developing stages etc...therefore that particular function/process is avoided and hence fewer processes.Sounds crap, but I verified it from a book. The book was written in english by the way.My theory is similar to the theory of how the evolution started from the primordial soup. That is,everything happened as an accident. Some chemicals were put together and then the ambiance was conducive enough for these chemical to form an egg and then the chicken. Now if you are lost, then here is the gist of the abovementioned paragraph in the next paragraph.

The egg formed due to an accident . The egg I say came first because it has fewer processes occuring parallely inside it.and then came the chicken!

Interesting theory, though only from the philosophical point of view.

The chicken itself did not appear as it is. First there were the unicellular organisms that reproduced by simple mitosis. Then they mutated to bi-cellular, and so on until one time when it became more useful to reproduce sexually, as it provided genes more opportunity to mutate, and hence increase chances of survival.

Hence, whatever gave rise to the chicken came first. And that thing reroduced sexually for the very first time to give an egg. The egg might be simpler than the chicken but it is not something that could ever have come first. The egg is the product of sexual intercourse that occured between two pretty complex individuals.

Who is more more evolved, man or a women?

by Aishwarya » Fri Mar 25, 2005 6:08 am

Well, it is pretty obvious that women are more evolved than men.I am not saying this because I belong to the fairer sex but because it is a fact. There are many theories that prove so,some of them are psychological, some philosophical ,some mathematical etc etc. What I have here is scientific proof, based on theory of evolution.

Mankind descended from apes therefore manking is more eveloved than apes.Apes have more hair on their body.Let me thne introduce you to a very significant number called the hair index. It is given by the ratio of number of hair strands on the body and the surface area of the body.Apes have higher HI than men.Men( the male species of mankind) again have higher HI than women( the fairer sex!).

Here the sample is 6 billion implying that (p<0.0000001). If you are thinking how your HI was calculated ,well then there is a secret movement going on all over the world that secretly records data from even the most insipid organism that belongs to human species. This movement is called Association for Emancipation of Men.This was actually to prove that men were more evolved than women but the data obtained was otherwise.Hence, they aborted their missiom and now are into studying male cockroaches and are trying to prove that male cockroaches are more evlovled than female raoches. But there is a speculation that they are failing to prove the same.

I like this logic... evolution in a day!

Here is a nice slogan for Gillette... Use our products and take a step further in evolution!

Wonder how evolved Whales and dolphins are.

Coming to the hen first or egg first. I dont know the answer but I am sure that your theory is wrong.

Your assumption that the more evolved organisms are more complex and hence took longer time to appear is plain wrong.

It took a billion years for the first unicellular organism to take life on earth. Billion years for the simplest form of life. From then it took hardly 100 million years for man to evolve.

It took 40,000 years of collective scientific knowledge of human species to invent a vacuum tube transistor and the first computer. From there it took 40 years to have tablet PC, which is less complex than the first computer.

The first step is the toughest one, once you take the first step you evolve rapidly. The evolution need not always be a complex one.

As for egg and hen... egg didnt not materialize out of thin air neither did hen. They are all evolved forms of their predecessors. Incremental changes.

Your example that the lack translates into one process less for the brain doesnt hold true in this case because the egg does not have any brain in the first place. This makes the transformation from egg to a chick much more complex than the hen laying an egg.

Man too evolved from apes, but there is a vast difference between the forest langoor and man. The ape closest to man is ? orangutan ?, but man did not evolve directly from orangutan or whatever. There are atleast a 100 species of neanderthal and the like between orangutan and man. They all had minor differences, incremental changes. One fine day an ape in africa thought of standing up on two legs to look for food and thus evolved the homo sapiens. The homo sapiens killed all other species below them in the evolution ladder. That is why today we do not see any other species similar to man. There are mokeys, langoors, orangutans and gorillas but only one homo sapien.

Only partly agree with Aish's theory.

Each time something is conceived (the Egg, in our case), it is genetically superior to its ancestors (in most cases).

And so, as time flew by and the species that was the forefather of the Hen continued to evolve; each generation of the Hen was better than the last, and each time an egg was conceieved it had certain modifications in it's genes that made it superior than the last generation (an upgrade). This slooow process went on until one day, an egg was conceived which had the blueprint of the Hen (which we recognise as a Hen/chicken today).

Therefore, (if anybody can make sense of this post) the egg may have come before the chicken, but not in the way Aishwaraya says...
