The Origin of Spices

by lonewolf » Mon Nov 22, 2004 9:13 am

I've been using different masalas the last few weeks, and have fully forgotten how to use raw spices.

Anyone interested in throwing light on how to prepare the mix from bare spices, so I can cook chicken curry without buying the MDH or Parampara masalas from the shops? Please include the English name and the Arabic/Indian name. Thanks :D

I was always interested in knowing about the history of spices in India. My Iranian professor at school and I used to discuss this quite a bit. He was surprised that Indian food tastes a lot like Iranian food. Then I told him that the spices that we use are in fact Iranian/Persian, and were brought into India by Nadir Shah and company. :D My middle east (Arab) friends also use the same spices.

Way off topic - Here's a true incident that happened outside an Indian restaurant.. One of my friends was standing outside the restaurant and he noticed a group of Sikh men coming out. There were a few Afro-Americans hanging out there, and when they saw the Sardarjis, they lifted their hands hopped on one leg, and starting singing "trrrr bhallay bhallay". :D The Sardarjis didn't know what to say. Then, the Afro-American guys walked upto them, shook hands and said "We watch your music videos on TV.. They are just like hiphop.. Which country are you guys from?". The Sardars told them that they were from India, and the Afros were surprised.. They spent about half an hour talking, then shook hands and left.
