China & India: To know each other better

by China & India: To know each ot » Sat Apr 17, 2004 11:43 am

As China-India relation improves, more intercommunions are needed. I think we should develop more package tour routes to each other as we had to western countries. Your comments are welcome. No abuse or hatred please.

BTW: How does Hyderabad rank among all Indian cities?

I agree. Unfortunately, the only things we know about the Chinese are their cuisine and their Feng Shui (and their manufacturing successes). It would be interesting to travel to China and visit the cultural / historic sites. Of religious importance to Hindus is the Manasarovar lake - origin of the holy river Ganga, which is located in Chinese territory.

I also feel that there should be opportunities to learn Mandarin, a language which may become increasingly useful as we start doing more business with countries like China / Hong Kong & Taiwan. There's already a center in Hyd that teaches Japanese, but unfortunately no such avenue to learn Mandarin / Korean etc.

There was a lot of noise in the media about opening up of the Nathu La pass, to facilitate Indian - Chinese trade and movement of goods. Dunno what's the latest on that. Also, the scene on air travel between the major Indian and Chinese cities. (I dunno how's the scene between India - Pakistan, btw.)

BTW: How does Hyderabad rank among all Indian cities?

How about right at the top? ;) Are you writing from China?

Well yo dude.. i do agree dat we need to have some exposure to each other.. there are places to see in china.. and also things to learn frm there (hardwork and dedication :) ) ofcourse barring the communist attitude prevailing ovva there...

The only export or the exposure i personally had frm china is CHInese Food(authentic not the indianised version :x ), martial arts, and the spiritual way of life... :)

I was always interested in chinese culture and customs... as in to know more about them... chinese civilization is one of the ancient one.. and the mystery of martial arts still amazes me... i wanna visit the Temple of Shaolin once in ma life..:)

And eg. Hyderabad dude.. i tell u its the BEST city ranked right up there 8)

I have to confess that i know little about India too, i got the impression

from some India movies that every Indian dances well. Afterwards are the booming software industry, medicine production, and service sectors. When i find this site via Google, i just don't know there is a such prosperous city of Hyderabad beside Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. But that doesn't prevent my favor of this discussion board, the work of the fullhyd.com team is admirable.

I am from Hunan province in middle south of china. I am interested in India culture. We both have great culture and long history, to survive is not easy, isn't it? For the cultural / historic sites you mentioned, i'm sorry to tell you that most of them are written in Chinese, even though i'll try to find some suitable for you.

The first groups of Chinese tourists to visit India setted out at April 2003.

We really need more groups like that. Travel to Europe is too expensive,

:( about 15000 yuan($1875) for a five day tour.

Really? I've heard that Mumbai is the most prosperous one.

Xiaowind, thx for replying. I think there's a slight misunderstanding which i thought of clarifying. when I said 'sites' I meant places of tourist interest, not web-sites. Dont bother finding me websites, I can do that by performing google searches :) I was just expressing my desire to travel around China. Well, too many desires, too less money / time .........

Hey v have a chinese restaurant by that name (Hunan) in hyderabad. so thats something in common already :D

Mumbai is the biggest city in India. comparetively hyd, even though it is older than mumbai, is small but doing a really good job and is much more laid back than mumbai.

china is a really big country and certainly one of the oldest in the world. I love chinese food. I am sure there are a lot more chinese recepies than we know here in India. and most of them have been indianised by now!!!

Yes it is my mistake, however i'd like to give this link: http://english.rednet.com.cn/, it's the only english website of Hunan, but it's a pity that it is not frequently updated and has not a nice discussion board like here.

to Johnny:

Shaolin Temple is regarded as the origin of Martial arts, it is frequently

mentioned in novels or movies about Chinese Kung fu. Indeed Martial arts is taught in some of our univerity (including mine). But i think Martial arts is not very helpful in fight as described in movies, believe me.

All i know about our buddhist culture is that it was introduced from India.

 Almost every Chinese know the famous Tang dynasty monk Tangseng who went to India to get buddhist sutras.

Really? I love Hunan food, it's delicious, but has a lot of chili, try it if

you dare.

As to Mumbai-Hyderabad comparison, i think it has something like the

comparison of Shanghai with some other smaller cities: there are more chances and skyscraper in Shanghai, but life there is strained, living cost is high, and to go to work take you lot of time; many people prefer to live in a smaller and beautiful city, where life is peaceful and air is fresh.

Yea Shaolin temple is reagrded the origin of chinese martial arts, but legend says dat martial arts were more prevalent in ancient India( now only in kerala), which when buddhism was spreading in china, even it spread, and in the process transforming to become more chinese...

Dude martial arts is helpful in real fights too, atleast it has been for me..( m talkin about the fights not involving gunpowder :D)

But obviously when it come to modern arts it overpowers martial arts anytime ;)

And moreover it is never taught in any real martial art, to misuse the art.. its for our own self to gain more control over our emotions and get spiritually enlightened.. Ppl who wanna learn it for the sole purpose of bashin up someone cannot benefit to the full extent.. :)

Some kind of Martial arts of Shaolin Temple may be from India, i guess,
because Many Kungfu Novels have mentioned Sakyamuni as a person of great Martial arts. Still there are many kind of indigenous Martial arts, such as the Kungfu of Thaiji ( sorry, only pronunciation ), which is still popularly exercised.

But obviously when it come to modern arts it overpowers martial arts anytime And moreover it is never taught in any real martial art, to misuse the art..

Absolutely right! Martial arts are very powerful in ancient China. In the

miserable history of Tsing Dynasty, when people found martial arts defeated easily by gun power of western invaders, they switched their attention to gun making and abandoned this "useless skill". That's why most martial arts tought in university now have only shape and no inbeing. For me martial arts is a kind of sports, but i am favor of Martial arts novels, there are so many people who love Kungfu novels and movies that Martial arts almost became a culture.

the life of monks here has changed a lot. Besides practising Wushu and sitting in meditation, they can also play games on the Internet and drive cars, etc. (Xinhua Photo)

:D from Hong Kong movies it sure looks like all chinese know martial arts, and that even school kids fight amongst themselves using kung fu!
ya, chinese/japanese martial arts are very popular here. even i practice a bit of Tai Chi as apart of my fitness workout daily.

Xiaowind wrote:Almost every Chinese know the famous Tang dynasty monk Tangseng who went to India to get buddhist sutras.
in our history, we read abt 2 chinese monks, Huen Tsang and Fa Hien (i hope spellings right) who travelled to India centuries ago. is the Tangseng u mentioned, same as one of these two???

Xiaowind wrote:I love Hunan food, it's delicious, but has a lot of chili, try it if you dare.
hey dude! u r challenging the wrong people! :D this region is renowned for its hot n spicy food. the people here just love chilli!

thats also why u rarely get authentic chinese food in chinese restaurants here. most of them are indianised with wee bit more spices n sometimes local ingredients too. as far as i know, there are only three chinese restaurants in hyderabad that try to get the taste closest to authentic chinese.

Xiaowind wrote:As to Mumbai-Hyderabad comparison, i think it has something like the comparison of Shanghai with some other smaller cities: there are more chances and skyscraper in Shanghai, but life there is strained, living cost is high, and to go to work take you lot of time; many people prefer to live in a smaller and beautiful city, where life is peaceful and air is fresh.
tho i wont talk abt the freshness of the air here :) u r not far wrong. Hyderabad is far more quiter n laid back compared to mumbai or delhi. People are more easy going and friendlier too!

hyderabad has a small chinese community...most of them settled here in India during the first communist revolution there (largest concentration being in Calcutta). they generally run chinese restaurants, beauty parlors, laundries and a few r dentists too.

u r welcome to visit here anytime. hyderabad is not an expensive city.

Maybe, then i'll be jealous of these monks coz i have no access of wireless network. :)

Maybe Huen Tsang is the monk i mentioned as Tangsheng. But Fa Hien, in my memory, is a mythic person. I'v to tell you i am a bad student in history. In a fairy story, Fa Hien is a monk with great magic power, and was abused for his buring under a tower a beautiful female goblin who fell in love with a human.

It's a pity that we don't have Indian restaurants in Hunan, may be Changsha ( capital of Hunan province ) is not so famous as Shanghai, Beijing... Its population is 2 million, half the size of Hyderabad, but here we have a famous natural landscape named Zhangjiajie. Check this link:

Welcome to there, also it won't cost you much.

Good work, you can visit China now, :D if you got lost, simply find a young man/women, especially who wear glasses, and he/she can speak to you slowly and simply in English, but remember: don't use words more than 7 letters.
