Elusive dreams for Hyderabad

by vivek » Wed Jul 02, 2003 11:54 am

Mr Naidu has tried to position Hyderabad in all conceivable formats. Some of which are \'IT capital of India\', \'ITES capital of india\', \'Genome city of India\' ...and many more. Nothing worked. God knows how he managed to tag Hyderabad as the \'most well-lit city in India\'! Dreams, as they say, materialize only when you wake up. Our babus are still sleeping, and here are some of the best dreams they managed to document during \'sleep\'.<br><br>

<b>GIGA</b> - Global Institute of Ggeneral Awareness - Planned as a center of excellence in God knows what area of study, GIGA was presented in a wide screen projection screen to Mr. Bill Clinton. But then, that\'s it.<br>
<b>Global Positoning System in intra-state buses</b> - Now don\'t laugh, this was a project supposed to be directly under the CM\'s nose. Installing GPS in intra-state buses would enable the RTC to pin-point the exact location of the best chaiwala in the state where they can park their buses and cause further delay. But the core issue is lack of funds - and even the World Bank won\'t give us any more money!<br>
<b>Bar-Coding Autos</b> - This is superb - apna govt. wanted to paste a bar code in each of the autos to screen out illegal auto drivers in the city, and each traffic police would be provided with a bar code reader which would fetch the auto details. But our buggers would spit pan on the bar code and that is how a government project worth crores went down the drain.<br>
<b>Mounting cameras in traffic islands</b> - An international traffic violation checking mechanism, this would require more investment in hyderabad. One camera that would check number plates and zoom in, which the fellas in the control room would forget to note. And a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh... one to check for those who drive on the wrong side! Plus, one dedicated camera to zoom in RTC uses who by the way are the first ones to violate signals!<br><br>

I can go on and on, but indicsipline and violating rules is running in our blood. We don\'t need any of these pro\'missing\' projects, we just have to follow rules. I mean, how hard is it to stop when it shows red? and you complain of bad traffic! You are the reason for the mess.

why shud these be elusive, Vivek? They are infact achiveable, but we do not need the govt to do any of those stuff that u mentioned w/ such high costs ! they will not work, as yet, atleast. As learner said, each one of us need to put in the effort to stay put at the line while on red etc !
But you knwo what, vivek? when I used to do that, I looked so stupid and crazy !! because I would be the only one left behind, with the horns honking for me to move to a side if I want to stop on red !! with some added glances of,\'hey u mad or what!?\'. I do stay put at the line, bravely, and with a very straight face, though ! whenevr I am in India :)My rear passenger or my co-passengers are at risk. They will have to become one of me, right? whether they believe in it or not the extent that I do at that point of time.Hey, Its enjoyable, anyways. the whole experience of taking somebody along, I did not realise that until now !

Ya just like me, i follow traffic rules. There are over a dozen signals i come across where no soul follows signal. I follow. Stop when its red and nine out of ten cases i am the only guy static. Makes me feel silly, but i just want to. Some people stop after me and slowly everyone. But its the bus guys who care a damn. Which means, if you and me make efforst nothings gonna happen. And govt. is going to to be the same.

Dear Arch / Vivek,

I too look silly sometimes, but eventually each individual will someday add up.

I feel simply good and satisfied that I have done something good today.

Good, nice to read this kinda stuff. If each of us follow rules despite feeling stupid, everyone follows rules and no one feels stupid!

Hey, you kno what? there was one more of a interesting incident while I was staying in bangalore, yes,it happened in bangalore ! An autowala and a carwala had a head-on collision on a corner of a galli. Since the speeds arent\' that much, thodisi bumps on both the vehicles and probably the passengers,a lot shaken. It was the morning commute time, offices, schools etc.. an extremly busy time, to reach anywhere \'in time\'. These guys wanted to know right away who was at mistake, not wanting to move an inch for the rest of the traffic to move around too, (police ki invlovement ki zarurath nahin thi! for them to decide kaun kahan tha etc. hardly any bumps to either of the vehicles)right in the middle of the road ! O..O.K.kk ! I was on my 2 wheeler probably a vehicle or 2 away with an urgency to reach my place.I honked. Nobody cared. honked some more, Nope. they were too busy with themselves and the rest awaiting for them to finish or complaining or if possible take a U turn (just what I had been doing earlier times) and scoot. I put my finger on the horn and left it there. It was quiet comical, the result ! those 2 parties were thoroughly flabergasted that they were NOT able to hear themselves shouting at each other over the sound of my horn and some of us felt that I was adding to the nuisance ! Oh, well. My hand just wud\'nt leave the horn. I was in a hurry, right? and I cannot even take a U turn by now.. well, i might as well be a nuisance to those 2 performers. and hey, vivek, you know what? They looked so irritated that they simply moved to a side. Wow, was I saved. Most of us left the scene with a wow and a smile. Guess, we can use such a badmashi in similar situations.

That was good to read. I mean, you gotta irritate people this way sometimes. Especially when these car driving school cars are driven in the middle of the road at dead slow speed!

Let\'s wait for the ripple effect. I am confident there are lots of others out there, especially girls, who do follow the rules but do not have the time or the resources to respond on this forum.

Hi Vivek, nice to see you man after that \'\'america around you or something\'\'
Not too long ago I met a guy at the ministry of IT in New Delhi, he had similar views like you. Apparently too much show off and hype \'\'aamdani athanni kharcha rupaiya\'\' type of thing. you know.

Elusive dreams for Hyderabad

by vivek » Fri Jul 11, 2003 12:24 pm

I just came back from chennai after a week long trip. I now feel there is something \'seriously\' dumb about our hyderbad and i am not happy feeling this way. Why?. Chennai guys drive in a relatively orderly fashion than hyderabadies. That city makes you feel like you are in an urban setup. Hyderabad on the contrary looks messed-up like a small town desperate to make it big. The way we maintain our airports and chennai maintains are so different. Hyderabad airport is worser that Chennai railway station. It is not because of lack of funds, but lack of innovation and efforts to market. Before you respond, please try to spend few minutes in infont of secundrabad railway station in the morning hours. You have an auto stand, taxi stand, bus stop and all that. So does chennai central and bangalore. Asses the mess in sec\'bad. Its beyond repair. It takes about 5 mins to get a taxi in Chennai aiport, the same takes 20 mins in hyd. A 20 min drive in chennai is atleast 15 Km. In hyd it is about 7 Km. Both cities have the same kind of roads and ofcourse the same vehicles. The difference is the driving.
