Mohammed Hanjour, Oxford: Do you truly believe that in order to avoid a nuclear exchange, the US would launch an attack on Indian forces which was the scenario in the programme?
Karl Inderfurth:
That will be a terribly difficult decision for any US president to make - to launch an attack on Indian forces. It was the one that the advisers came up with in their deliberations before I entered the room as president. I was somewhat taken aback because as many people know, the United States has for the past several years - first under President Clinton and now under President Bush - worked very hard to improve and strengthen our relations with India. I was a part of that so the idea that we would be attacking Indian forces, sort of set me back.
Also in this scenario, India was not the country responsible for the immediate crisis. It related to terrorist attacks in Kashmir and the assassination of an Indian defence minister and then a movement by Pakistani forces across the international border into India. So India was responding to these events.
But it was placing at risk a large number - 20,000 Americans in the region -and that if there were a nuclear exchange, these Americans would be at risk. So the US had a responsibility to see what could be done to try to get the two sides to back away from pushing the nuclear button. All of that led to the possibility of an attack on Indian forces.
As you know, I also said in The Situation Room scenario that if we are going to threaten that use of military force, we also had to tell Pakistan to get its forces also back across the international border into Pakistan and that we should also work with India to go after those terrorist camps that had provoked this - including those in the Pakistani-held portion of Kashmir. So it was a complicated scenario but it is one where use of force may have been used.

So just bcos the US believes its nationals to be in danger, it doesnt hesitate in attacking India, knowing fully well that India was provoked into the conflict. I agree the interest of US as a nation and its nationals is of paramount factor for America. But to attack a country to save its own hide ......
