Cool Illusion
Thisillusion was originally presented in Thompson, P. (1980) "Margaret Thatcher: a new illusion." Perception. 9(4):483-4. It's since come to be known as the Margaret Thatcher Illusion, so it seemed appropriate to demonstrate it in the US with George W. Bush. Look at the two pictures below. Although they may look a bit different, neither should seem too odd. Click on the picture to flip it vertically so you can see the faces right side up...

The Einstein Hollow Face Illusion
The Hollow Face Illusion is probably one of the most amazing optical illusions we have come across. Plus this is Einstein Year. So... Grand Illusions has commissioned this particular version of the Hollow Face Illusion.
The original head of Albert Einstein was created for us by the sculptor Bryan Parkes and the manufacturing process was managed by David Burder. This is a 1.5 times life size version of Albert Einstein's face, since the illusion works best when the head is slightly larger than life size.Everyone I have shown it to flips out!! - Barry M, USA
It is made from a very strong plastic, and is virtually unbreakable. The mask can be stood up in a window and the whole face seems to follow you as you move around the room. Truly, an amazing illusion... The mask is 43cm high and 31cm wide.

Magic Tricks - I'm With The Band
EFFECT: The man tells the folks that not only is he a hell of a magician, but he's also somewhat musically inclined. For instance, he claims the first note he ever learned was on a stretched out rubberband.
To demo, the man takes out a small pile of rubberbands and tosses them onto the table. Picking one up, he stretches it between his hands and proceeds to pluck out a couple notes, the first being a B flat. He continues trying to convince the audience by plucking out a second note, an F sharp.
Still seeing disbelief in their eyes, he decides to try a different approach. "You've heard of a two count rest?" he asks as he lets go of one end of the rubberband, which remains suspended for a count of two before snapping back and falling onto the table.
Now it is plain to see that the man is not only with the magic, but he's definitely "with the band"!

Waterlogged Camera Turns Magic - Curious Effects
...
Farrell Eaves' camera was a perfectly ordinary Nikon CoolPix 990 until he accidentally knocked it into a pond last summer. Now it's a magic camera.
After the accident, Eaves spent weeks broiling, baking and blow-drying the camera ... but it still sloshed. So he decided to see what a soggy Nikon could do, and soon discovered the resurrected camera was creating curious effects in each image.
Glowing auras, symmetrical rainbow-hued streaks or pools of brilliant color appear in every image Eaves captures with the camera. The effects aren't visually random; they make perfect sense within the context of each image.
...
After a week on the windshield, the fog on the camera's components dissipated. Eaves knew it was now time to test the camera. He composed his first shot, pressed the shutter button, and was stunned by what he saw in the camera's preview monitor.
"The image that appeared in the monitor that first time was different from any I had ever seen before," Eaves said. "It was not distorted or misshapen, but it revealed colors and patterns that were not at all consistent with what I saw with my eyes."
Eaves describes that moment as "sheer joy. Or, as the kids put it, a total rush. A whole new approach to photography was in my hands and on my mind. The years fell away and I felt like a child seeing the world for the first time."
Each of the 8,000 or so photos Eaves has since taken with the camera features a different effect.

Not A (Re)Tired Life - Children Sopport ... Illusion
MOST Indians assume, and convince others also, that their pension would support them. Though, at heart they are in doubt on account of the waning rupee power. Some suggest that their children will take care when they get old. It is a mere illusion. The fact is that children get low salaries at the start of their career.

Illusions and Realities in Ibsen’s Plays The Wild Duck and Ghosts
In this essay, Ibsen’s plays, The Wild Duck, and Ghosts are considered in relation to themes of illusions and realities. In both plays, families are held together by illusions, yet torn apart by truths that have been concealed to protect the children. Ibsen’s use of artistic realism is an ironic art form where illusions and realisms are contradicted to reveal the deeper conflicts of ordinary lives. Ibsen presents the complicated realities of ordinary lives and emphasizes the fact that there are always many realities -- just as there are many illusions.
