Safety ki itni fikr hain to pehle,

- Roads ki halaath theek karo.

- RTC / truck driver ko train karo, work shops run karo un makela**o ko traffic sense sikhao. In case of emergency what to do sikhao.

- iske baad helmet rule justified hain.

Safety .... Helmet khreedo,

Phir next hata payra bachanae metal ke kapde pehnao, jub tuk road ke halaath nahi sudharte helmet koi kaam ki nahi!!!

Whaaaaa....hamlet for pillion riders!???

Just imagine what would happen if a family of four decides to go to lumbini park on a two wheeler...

Imagine Mr.Anjaneyulu driving his Bajaj chetak with his wife Mrs. Anjaneyulu, draped in a saree and sitting with both legs on same side of the pillion, Anjaneyulu jr. standing between him and the handle bar obstructing his view and baby Anjaneyulu sitting between her mother and father... all wearing Hamlets!!!
May the Fries be with you!

Good point MM... I dont see a future for this law.

While I agree that the rider should wear helmets, I dont see how a small family on a Scooter can adhere to the rule. If the dad(rider) wears helmet and the rest dont.. how does that save the family.

I think... The Helmets should be made compulsary for rider(s) on all bike(s) and for the pillion.. unless it affects the driving capability of the rider.

Indian companies should start making some cool helmets to attaract people to wear one.

bhai DQ... forget the government. If the roads/traffic are already so bad ... isn't it better for YOU to wear a helmet? Nobody's claiming this will save your life however bad the accident is... it just might help.

RTC DRIVERS TO WALK AWAY EASY AFTER AN ACCIDENT

Todays deccan chronicle news, and the RTC mazdoor union is planning to felicitate RP Singh.

What a sham, have you seen them drive. Among the major causes of chaos on the roads, and with these metro liners you dont even hear them.

While travelling in one of the buses I have actually seen a Conductor and driver delibrately shock a lady who was pillion riding with her husband. They drove very clos to the scooter and honked, The guy was starled and literally lost balance and fell away from the bus, and these guys laughed it off.

Instead of ropingthem in, we are giving them a free go and taxing the denizens with a helmet rule.

could someone explain to me how anybody finds it a valid position to support manditory helmet wearing for the driver of a two-wheeler, but not the pillion rider? both are in an equally dangerous position, perhaps more so in the case of the pillion rider.

yes i know this debate is pretty much dead at this stage, but i would like to hear someone defend this position.

interesting debate, i would say in general i believe enforcing things like this is not the gov's job, they should educate, inform everybody of how monumentally STUPID it is to ride without a helmet, how dumb it would be to ride pillion without a helmet, and how unintellegent it is to carry your whole family on the back of a bike designed for max 2.

If i fall from a cliff while rock climbing and i get brain damage cos i didnt wear a protective helmet i won't be thinking "Screw the government for not forcing me to wear a helmet" i'll be thinking "i'm such a stupid git, i deserve this". If the government starts banning things left, right and center then it reduces individual responsibility, as a result people will act less individually responsible.

ps. I think everyone should wear a helmet, if they are on a bike. India has banner ad's everywhere (at least in Chennai there are, man is that place ad-packed) all that needs to happen is for large posters along the roadside showing pictures of corpses that have just come off moterbikes without helmets, deliver leaflets door to door, ad's in newspapers, i bet within a few months peoples mothers will be inforcing it, no way is someone going to let a family member ride without a helmet if they see the consequences in technicolour ever day on the way to work.

You've got a very valid point here Marko.

What I am trying to prove here that Helmets are not the only situation and in certain cases more damaging to the Indian road user.

What the government needs to concentrate more on is

1. To improve the conditions of the roads

2. Monitor the flow of heavy vehicular traffic.

3. Educate users on how to share roads.

Helmets are going to cause another burden and add to the chaos of the already chaotic roads.

While implementing the rule, the only point the govt comes up with is Helmets will save lives.

So will

- Stopping overloaded lorries and buses plying on the raods

- Stopping the hundreds of road users honking (beleive me the horns on the vehicles used by ministers is so shrill and shoking).

- Stopping SUVs (sumos, minibuses), Autos, etc speeding and breaking every rule in the rule book.

You are right even pillion riders need to wear a helmet, but to enforce that you need to drive sense onto the road user. If you had seen yesterdays paper yopu would have understood what I am trying to potray. Every daily had the photo of a man carrying 6 children on the bike????

You make some good points.I tried to drive w/ a helmet, damn its irritating.Atleast in Delhi you were allowed to wear those half helmet's(You know the one the entire face isnt's covered...),w/ those atleast you can see sideways without turning your face.

1.For our roads to be better,we need broader roads with atleast 2 lanes.Once if there is a plan for road extension, the owner goes to court and gets an order. And then you know our judicial system, every case takes a LONG time.

2.Whenever police maintain the flow of traffic,we get a traffic jam.We cant do anything about this because there are a LOT of vehicles in hyderabad and less roads.

3.This is pretty hard.Even highly educated people always break rules. They honk during night time, they do high beams during the night when there are ample street lights, they pass signals even when its red......People never follow the rules. Its really irritating. The thing I find most irritating is high beam during the night. Its really irritating :x .People use high beam on neckless road, around chiran palace, around hitech city, during traffic jams(For crying out loud, these are the places where you dont need a high beam  ).Its really irritaing. Why the hell dont they understand that irritating for other people. :x

I remember 3-4 years ago, during 2000/2001.The police comissioner tried to kept restrictions on the horns and 7-seater auto's.But those idea's were thrown out due to protests. It was nice for like 6 months and after the protests it was back to normal.

Just check out this crap:

White not right, say civilians

The helmet rule has been a bone of contention for several years. Even former CM N Chandrababu Naidu tried to make wearing helmets mandatory, but met with such major public opposition, that he backed off. This time, C M Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and Tejdeep Menon, Asst Commissioner of Police (Traffic), are made of sterner stuff.

“Wearing helmets can save a person’s life and nothing is more important than that,” said Tejdeep. However, in all her zeal to make sure there’s no compromise on safety, she is toying with the idea of colour-coding helmets. Cops already wear blue helmets, civilians may have to wear white ones. This decision has raised a fresh controversy. Manufacturers don’t generally make white helmets, and the people who already own helmets don’t plan to invest in new ones.

The rationale behind this decision was to ensure standardisation. “It is to prevent sub-standard helmets from being sold. Once we see a white helmet, we will know that it is a branded, ISI certified one,” says Tejdeep. White helmets also have better visibility. But where does one get white helmets? Parthasarathy, a dealer for Volga helmets says that black is the standard colour. “Most people buy helmets to match the colour of their bikes, so red or black are the most popular choices. White helmets are not made at all, though some customers get them painted on order.”

Even N Srinivas, who sells Studd helmets says that white is not made. “If the government plans to pass this rule, they will have to inform the manufacturers,” says he. Two-wheeler owners are upset. “I can understand the helmet rule, but to insist on white helmets is going a little too far. I already wear a helmet, but I refuse to paint it white or buy a new one. As long as my head is protected, the colour shouldn’t matter,” says Mohit Nandur, an accountant.
It came on DC,I can give the link but it expires after 1 day.

This is plain BS.

well, since the rule's gonna be in effect pretty soon, i'd suggest ppl start wearing them helmets. if u havent got one, buy it! i agree, its risky for the pillion rider too but its gonna be pretty difficult to maintain that standard. ppl cant carry 2 helmets wherever they go

as far as the RTC bus drivers n gettin away with it so easy goes, it'll just lead to an increase in carelessness  just a few days ago, one dude who looked pretty new in the driver's seat rammed my cuz' jeep while turning. i guess, they should be properly trained n not too taxed about the time constraints. anyone can break under pressure. but, giving them such an easy passage with the accidents is just handing them a license to kill :?

Helmet locks are Pure horse-crap. Try to put your Studds helmet in your 'lock' at colleges.

Helmets indeed save lives, but they are very cumbersome; and helmet ko palna padhta hai. And the fact that I will not be able to make sure that the pillion rider also has a helmet everytime (as Azzy noted) reduces the vlaue of the helmet in my eyes.

well...in the days i was riding a bike, i always used my helmet lock for my STUDDS helmet while shopping, at the movies, or anywhere. never had to cary it around.

just coz u dont carry a second helmet does not mean its value is lost. it makes more sense for the pillion rider too to wear a helmet instead of just the driver. in any accident, pillion rider ne kya paap kiya? shudn't he/she too have the same right to survive? its always good to carry a spare helmet on a helmet lock for any pillion rider.

You hit the nail right on the head there. The same people who spend 1000 bucks for fancy horns are now saying that helmets are expensive. And then, they are not all that uncomfortable either. CAD rightly pointed out about helmet locks.

Sharjeel...neither is the fuel in your bike safe when its in the college parking. I've seen vehicles getting empty to the last drop. And going by that yardstick, burglaries & theft can happen anywhere.

Its compulsory in Delhi and I've used a helmet a lot. Its not all that bad and I would certainly recommend one.
