it does motivate. but i believe it makes ppl. materialstic. they tend to forget the good things in life and chase money. thats what i meant when i talked abt. american lifestyle.

to some extent, yes, there is frantic money chasing and ppl forget to stop smell the roses on the way. but stop to long smelling roses, u get left behind...we have to be honest here...while we take pride in our "laidbackness", its really not going to help us future....
we have to find the right balance between being laiback and otherwise....
abt being "materialistic", it only means that the people aspire for "material" things like own houses, TVs, gadgets, holiday travel etc that ensures a comfortable, enjoyable life. whats wrong in it? why is being materialistic and splurging on fun looked down upon in Indian culture. i do not agree with it. i admit without shame that i aspire to be rich and i am very materialistic. all of us are in one way or the other.

what do u mean by that? remember one one invests in a business if there is less scope for profits...foreigners pump in $$s, set up businesses, employ many locals, spend n live i India and its only fair that they expect to take back profits...why shud they invest otherwise?

I wish I just listened to my dad and moved back to Hyd to do medicene. I wanna move back.....but then Im really used to the American way of life. Besides, with my major Im more likely to succeed here. Inshallah.

Guess I'll make do with vacationing there :D

And one day when I move back for good, Hyderabad would be my first choice. Bangalore comes in at a close second.

Youre probably right. Theres no place like home. However, if I did get into med school, it would have been a college in either Hyd or Bangalore. Ive spent many a summer in Bangalore, and its pretty ok. I dont really feel like I "belong" there, but theres something about the city I like.

lets stick to the showing off part. if ppl. start earning money only to show-off there luxaries to the world....then i believe theres somethign wrong over there.

living in a city makes it compasory to buy certain things that are essential for a comfortable life chasing money will spoil the peace of mind.

if u earn a lot of money and u want to utilise it for the good of the economy then its a gr8 idea. but spending it on luxaries is not the best thing to do. there are several other avenues to invest in. buying luxaries is not an investment....coz when u sell them u wont get back the amt. invested.

if we are working hard to earn our money, i think we have a spend a part of on luxuries we can afford...else whats the fun of earning. investments are for the future...long term plans. if we invest most of our wealth, when wud we enjoy it? in old age?

there has to be a balance in saving/investment and splurging on the self. giving one up for the other is a baaad idea.

to Lexi: nice to see yr intentions Lexi....welcome back to hyderabad anytime! abt bangalore....yes its a lovely place to have fun! but personally i wudnt want to live there. believe me, its chaotic now. i've been there recently and it is no longer the bangalore of a few yrs ago. power cuts, bad roads, shitty traffic, high costs, vanishing greenery in many areas...it was shocking! i prefer to go to bangalore on a long weekend, get drunk, enjoy and come back home to hyderabad! :D

as i have already said saar there is nothing wrong in being materialistic. but I assumed u were intent on spending all of (most of) ur hard earned money on luxaries. thats what will make ppl. over-materialistic....

but neway i guess both of us are making the same point...with a bit of variation. :D
