Obsession with Engineering/Medical Degrees

by Kulcha Hyderabadi » Wed Jun 05, 2002 12:30 am

Why are we so obsessed with Engineering or Medical Degrees? If the name of the game is to make money, there is plenty to be made in other professions too. There is a big shortage of skilled workers like Plumbers, Electricians, Fitters, Painters, Machinists, Carpenters, Auto Mechanics etc in Hyderabad and a glut of Engineers and Doctors. Parents pay astronomical sums to get their children in Engineering and Medical Schools, is it justified? Is it a social stigma to pursue skilled craftsmen training? Large number of Engineering and Medical Schools has affected the quality of graduates. As I see now, the focus is on quantity rather than quality. About time Government stops issuing new licenses to new colleges and admission into Engineering and Medical schools should be restricted to only those who achieve high grades. What do you think folks?

i would rather say there should be no grading atall.....
that is bad.....there is abs no correlation btwn the marks we get and the intelligence factor!!!!!
ne one can become a engineer whats the BIG deal.....if ne one works in SIEMENS or BMW, say for 4-5years, he acquires more knowledge than Our IIT alumni.....kulchaaa we dont have the industry in India n hence all this obsessions

Kulcha Bhai, I think the time has come to sort the things out. You are absolutely right it should be restricted to the ones who achieve high grades, so that the students who pass the Engineering or Medical can get jobs. Now a days so many students are getting degrees but are unable to get jobs, cause saturation. As you said every one is running behind the Medical College or Engineering degress or even i want to add the IT, so the outcome, shortages in other fields. Even the parents are forcing their kids to do Medical or Engineering even they dont care whether their kid is capable of doing or is he interested in doing. So, i can say the parents are also reponsible for this matter.

Obsession with Engineering/Medical Degrees

by Ucchu Mian » Wed Jun 05, 2002 12:30 am

Dear Kulcha, the reasons for this are many. As we all know 1) in Hyderabad or elsewhere professions like fitter, carpenter etc are considered inferior no matter if one is a master of the skill comparatively an inept and slothful engineer or doctor is much respected. Good or Bad this is a fact. 2) All Hyderabadis are like a herd of sheep. If one goes in one direction then all other follows. We have seen from time to time a trend prevailing where everybody wanted to become Civil Engineer, Mech Engineer, MBAEngineers, MBA , Computer Engineer etc etc. so this continues.
3)In many cases I have seen childrens being forced by their parents to do Engineering/medicine just to satisfy their ego. Parents in this lot thinks because the son of their brother or sister was admitted in Engineering/Medicine it is a matter of prestige for them to have their own children enrolled in these disciplines no matter what amount of money needs to be paid and more interestingly no matter what the interests of the children are:
4) Because of the general perception of these trades being inferior students try / pursuade harder for Eng/Medicine degrees.
5) Earning wise these degrees fetch hell lot.
6) These degrees also guarantees big DOWRY.
7) Your CV is on priority at match making centres.
8) You automatically qualify for the title \"SAB\"\"
and lot more the list is huge.

Yep, I guess the responsibility squarely lies with the parents. Its about time they stop this practice of force-feeding professional courses down the throats of their kids. Money facilitates admission into college, but it will not change the capability of the child. Parents must understand that not every child is gifted. This obsession has resulted in the establishment of several colleges and most of them do not even have qualified faculty. Its a racket! No wonder you see shady characters entering into this business (yeah business it is now a days). They charge exorbitant sums of money and most parents willingly give away, in some cases, their entire life savings! What a tragedy.

Kulcha Bhai, you have finally selected a good topic. I don\'t know why all Indians seem to think that there is no other profession than a doctor or engineer . I have seen so many of my family members spend lakhs of rupees just to get the kids in medical colleges . After that when the studies are done they either have to go to some middle eastern country ,or nowadays I see people interested in America or Canada. It is very sad because after spending lakhs in colleges they are worthless in India.People need to realise like you said that there are lot more professions than those two.All the other professions that you mentioned are considered \"kyaa third kilaas kaam karra unay , logon kay ghar kay mhorian ,paiqanay banata katay\". So,who\'s to change the Indian thinking ? Someone has to start it but we all want the other person to start first.

Yeah, thats one of the problems. Its time now to create Corporate Universities. A Corporate University can lengthen the shelf life of knowledge and help align training and education with strategic business goals. These kind of alliances have brought rich dividends in the Western World. I\'d luv to see industries and corporations taking more interest in Educational Institutions.

Great comments from Radha, Hina Bahen, Ucchu Miah. It is very difficult to change the minds of parents. Kulcha Bhai is talking the profession of plumber, painter, fitter etc. (phela comment family yeh hoga - izzat mithi mein mila diya khandan bhar ki) even the whole family feel very bad if you start business like hotel, grocery shop, STD booths. First we should change our minds regarding these professions and then we can do whatever is good for us.

hi, interesting topic is being discussed here.... its most likely that a person goes for a profession like engg`ing medicine management etc....rather than profession like electrician fitter etc.... this is due to lack of DIGNITY OF LABOUR in our country...unlike as in western or european countries..labour is respected and far more highly paid...
i dono if iam deviating from the topic but there is no scope for our country to develop with this huge population....which i think is the main cause to most of the problems our country faces...

There is no problem if qualified people pursue these professions. I am worried about the obsession in getting paper degrees by those who do not even meet the minimum criteria! The debate is about why are they (less qualified) so keen to get engineering/medical degrees? When they can make good money through gainful employment in other trades/skills.

Bhaimiya, i think Kulcha bhai is not exactly asking to do jobs of Plumbers, Electricians, Fitters, Painters, Machinists, Carpenters, Auto Mechanics ( personally i think these are also the best jobs) but why only Medical or Engineering why not other studies. Most of the parents want their kids to become Engineers and Doctors what about other categories. And after all this if they get a degree also what about a job, then the same parents will tell \"we spend a lot of money and these kids cannot do any thing\" and if they fail to get a degree same thing, how the parents think that by force and money the kids will become doctors or engineers? They should ask the kids what is his interest then decide about his studies.

My 2 cents on this............Topic/Issue selected in this thread is worth debating and getting everyone\'s inputs, ideas, feeback, criticism, etc are very much needed.
I also wonder why people in our country (let\'s stick to HYD)
are obsessed with Engineering/Medical/Management degrees. Well we know reasons and answers to this obsessed behaviour.
It\'s not just the parents, but the society itself has created such situations. Criticizing parents for all our social ills is not the answer. Imagine, at some point, we too would become parents and will have to practice what we preach on this discussion board. I dunno how many of us really practice what we try to preach here. So are we ready to take the blame for all these ills once we too become parents (b\'coz our kids too would blame for their misery).
Debating/Discussing this very topic would atleast help in someway, I hope. Perhaps it might enlighten people and make them do a self-introspection.

to keep it brief and short...

i'd prefer if all the haggard,old,phlegm-gargling tutors to stand in a straight line and be executed by the gun. First in the list is the so-called "academecian" C.Ramaiah. Then come all the other useless fellows.

Once they are done away with, the next bunch of fellas to be called for are that stinking rich School Teachers community who earn loads of money imparting so-called "IIT-Foundation" courses. Namely the buffoons who run institutes like Matrushri, Evens, some dude called Sharma.

Now that the second and first layers are exterminated comes the actual muck - The Engineering Colleges. Their ought to be a law that bans mentally challenged ppl from setting up colleges. If that were the case, probly half of Engg Colleges wd be illegal. With a paltry campus located 15-20 Km from the city, everyone is beginning to make money with Engg Colleges. You cd save the ammunition for such folks. Just put them in a chamber and gas them all to death.

With no more external distractions, schools cd educate the children more abt subjects such as Arts, History, Literature. Parents must have the will-power and courage to make sure their child chooses a career best for him/her. Nurture talent from the young ages and let them continue growing in such an environment.

Talent is not about Degrees or Ranks or Marks. Talent is not result-based. Talent is inherent in each being and it requires care and affection to hone it.

But who is to hear us shout out on discussion boards?? The world out there rather join a coaching institute!

PS: The same argument applies to the Medical stream too. They're as hopeless as the Engineers are.
