Rape Thread

by Mayavi Morpheus » Fri Aug 20, 2004 2:43 pm

I want to collect news reports of rape cases that appear in various news

papers. This is not discussion thread per se, just a collection of news.

If you see any reports, please post them here and the sentence given, with URL if possible and please no spamming.

Yet again, SC commutes death sentence of rapist

In yet another instance, the Supreme Court has commuted the death sentence awarded to a man for raping and murdering a Maharashtra school girl. He would now undergo life imprisonment.

A Bench of Justices B N Agarwal and H K Sema set aside a Bombay High Court judgment acquitting Man Singh Rahtore, accused of raping and murdering a school-going minor in Ambezri village of Maharashtra.

The Bench held him guilty for the girl's rape and murder and destruction of evidence but did not agree with the trial court, which awarded him the extreme penalty, and the high court which acquitted him.

Maharashtra government counsel Mukesh K Giri said that the high court findings were erroneous, perverse and resulted in miscarriage of justice.

Giri also said that there was no mitigating circumstances and the offence under section 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) is diabolic and brutal and deserved the extreme penalty.

On Wednesday, the apex court had commuted the death sentence given to an accused for raping and murdering a four-and-a-half-year-old girl.

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2004 02:25:41 AM ]

KOLKATA/JALPAIGURI: After rape, molestation. And, again, by men in uniform. Two drunk West Bengal Armed Police constables were arrested in Siliguri on Thursday, for allegedly molesting two sisters, who were returning from a nursing home on Wednesday night.

The incident came less than 24 hours after a Railway Protection Force constable raped a 30-year-old woman in the presence of her husband and children at Hasnabad railway station before daybreak the same day.

The alleged molestation occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday. Two constable of the Twelfth Battalion, Samir Saha and Bimal Haldar, who were not in uniform, first made lewd passes and then molested them.

There is never a shortage of rape related news :(

Seven years jail for rape of minor

Patna, Aug. 19: A Bihar court has sentenced a man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor. The trial court in Araria also fined Hira Lal Mandal Rs 1,000, failing which he would have to spend another year in jail.

Women’s organisations in the State have welcomed the sentencing and demanded speedy trials in all cases related to rape. Mandal’s conviction comes immediately after a man was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a minor in Gujarat and five days after rapist-murderer Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged in Kolkata.

It is an indication of lawlessness in the society. Every day I read reports

about rape of minors in some paper or the other. Have people become so

sexually deprived that they are raping 4 year olds? People are not afraid

of the consequences as the justice system is in shambles and offenders know that

they can get away with rape and even murder. This is why I support Death penality for rape.

Nothing upsets me more than the news of minors being raped and murdered.

I hope something will come out of this thread. A huge collection of related news may

work as data input for any statistics.

MM.....is rape the only reflection of lawlessness in society? There are many other crimes that can be put up as an example. And you are way off the mark if you feel that minors are raped because the rapist is sexually deprived.

Furthermore, I don't understand why a research scholar would like to browse to some idiotic thread called Rape Thread in a community forum to get statistical data on rapes.

I'm completely in agreement with the others here. This is nothing short of being gross.

I didnt say it is the 'only' reflection of lawlessness.

There are many other crimes that can be put up as an example.

May be, but in my view rape is the worst crime. Just see the responses in this thread itself. Just three reports grossed out you people, which crime would do that to you?

And you are way off the mark if you feel that minors are raped because the rapist is sexually deprived.

Ok, may not be deprived, may be people with raging harmones, _ up in the head, I just dont know what it is, but minors are raped because they wont offer any resistance.

Furthermore, I don't understand why a research scholar would like to browse to some idiotic thread called Rape Thread in a community forum to get statistical data on rapes.

The data is not for some researcher, but for myself. You may be right about the community forum part. This may not be the right place, but this is the only forum that I can start a thread, so let this be here as long as mods dont have a problem.

I'm completely in agreement with the others here. This is nothing short of being gross.

You can always skip this thread :)

Ps: Can we take the discussion to elsewhere and leave this thread for news only? Thanks

instead of the intended news items tht this thread was started for, im posting this from Wednesday's issue of DC :

Widow kills man in self-defence

Anantapur, Aug. 24: In an act of self-defence, a widow killed an assailant who tried to rape and murder her at Yadiki mandal of Anantapur district on Tuesday. The victim Lakshmi Devi, 22, told Deccan Chronicle that her neighbour Obulesu forcibly entered into her hut in the early hours at around 1 am.

“I begged and beseeched him to spare me. But all my pleadings failed to impress him as he was in an inebriated state. Acting like a beast, he removed his clothes and pounced on me,” the victim said. Obulesu died due to the impact of the blow delivered by the victim with a weaving rod, in an act of self-defence.

“My husband Raja Babu died over a year-and-a-half ago. I had been weaving the handloom left behind by him in order to feed my two children Nagendra and Narayana,” she said. Obulesu is also a handloom weaver, who had been residing in the village for the past three months, she said.

Gooty circle inspector Padmakar Reddy said Lakshmi Devi had exercised her right to self-defence under the provisions of Section 100 of IPC. “The right to self-defence could be exercised under three circumstances. The provision can be invoked when life of an individual or honour of a woman are in danger and also when there is the danger of grievous hurt,” the CI said.

*applauds the brave woman*

heartening piece of news... feel glad to hear about a would-be-rapist/rapist (not much difference between the two) getting the death penalty... at the hands of the would-be-victim
