The most comprehensive review of Gmail

by vivek » Mon Jul 05, 2004 8:56 pm

In the next 10 hours, we would be presenting the most comprehensive review of a very different email service by the god of search engines, Google.com. The email service by Google.com called Gmail has been the talk of all active participants of the internet for the past 2 months. We would be incorporating several comments from other GMAIL users ( currently about 20 have joined) into a one know-all review with much in demand screen shots.

Watch this space for that!

Incase you are a GMail user of the current version and wish to share your comments. Send them to info@themavericks.net with 'Gmail review' as the subject.

Also, find the review in this space.

To start with

To start with , The real factor that make Gmail has not been discussed properly at all. It has got buried under the whole storage debate.

Even if Gmail was offering 200MB, it still would be awsome. I have an account

Emailing has never been pain. Comments can be posted here. What i was requesting was some sort of pre-review comments that i can include in my review which eventually i will post here! Comments to my review will be more useful.

It is in beta and i have noted some minor bugs. Mails reach late would be first. Java deables browsers fail to load the email inbox.

There are more, which i shall make available.

i have accounts in yahoo, rediff, hotmail, but my main account is in Mail.Com n me very happy with it...best feature of it is the wide choice of extensions for yr emailID. ie u can choose from a list what comes after the "@" in yr emailID. ex: <yr ID>@<yr choice>.com

u get many funny choices too...
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

GMAIL invites are being sold for less than a dollar nowadays... coz its so common. I got my own invite for Free three weeks back.

Hotmail will be offering 250 MB soon.. and Yahoo has 100 MB now. I don't see many people shifting to Gmail because currently they dont support inline graphics (used for forwards) and antivirus scanning.

some one named abhishek arora posted this in my website and cp here. check is this is true?

i just learnt that hotmail and yahoo have been blocking or trying to block gmail invites. They have changed their system in such a way that invites arrive late in your yahoo or hotmail mail box.

that sucks because when you get an invite and then you find that it is invalid, there is no usue getting angry and envious at your friend.

Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

East or west...YAHOO is the best.

And more so after the 100MB account. Their mail management is wonderful. I still don't know whats gonna happen to attachments in my old mails. Lost quite a good deal on indiatimes and rediff. The attachments just wouldn't open.

The review

by vivek » Mon Jul 12, 2004 3:56 pm

THE REVIEW

Few months ago the general perception of email as a communication medium for text and picture messages was shattered when google.com, the most visited search engine in the world as on date announced the launch of GMail. Google.com’s very own email service offering a whooping 1Giga Byte of storage space literally eliminating the need to delete mails. Google had by now issued an alarm to other popular email service vendors like Yahoo!, MSN-Hotmail and Lycos.

Google.com’s strategy of launching an email service had a valid reason. According to official sources from Google.com, email is one of the strongest reasons for people to re-visit a website. By launching GMail, Google expects users of the email service to return more often then they normally do. Google.com is presently running GMail as a Beta test version. Only a chosen few have been given the privilege to test the services in its present state. A GMail Beta user gets to invite others periodically as and when a significant change in GMail is performed.

Here we have summarized the views and opinions of 17 GMail users who have been using the service as their primary email ID. These 17 users have been using GMail for the past 45 days with an average of 10 mails sent everyday.

Before we get into the actual review, we would like highlight that GMail does not load in IE versions of 5.5 and below. This is a vital feature which the GMail developers need to address.

GMail can be accessed from gmail.com which eventually lands at gmail.google.com. Unlike mail.yahoo.com, the log-in boxes in the GMail page take a while to appear. If you have Java disabled in your browser, the boxes don’t appear at all. After you log-in GMail using your username and password, the browser takes you through a secure connection (https), just like hotmail. The page then loads for a while before the inbox appears.

In GMail the whole package of Inbox, folder options, compose, sent mail load as a single component. In the sense, when you click on ‘compose’ the page does not reload. Its just appears in an instant. Just like tabs. Either the whole component loads or nothing appears. The ‘tab’ type of interface has been used to allow keyboard short cuts. So, we can hit the ‘C’ key in our key board and the compose window appears. Yahoo! Mail has been providing a more complex version of keyboard shortcuts for over a year now.

Win a GMail invite

by vivek » Mon Jul 12, 2004 7:28 pm

Guys,

I am willing to spare one GMail invite to the person who would write the best review of GMail in comparison to the other popular email services. Send me your version of review (preferably with screenshots) containing features offered by Hotmail,Yahoo,Lycos in comparison to those offered by GMail.

try to highlight the bugs that you have detected while using GMail.

I promise to send a GMail invite to the person of choice when i get the right to invite

That does not matter. you may review based on your friend's account. Or if you have a GMail account, you can review it yourself and in return i will spare one invite to the person of the reviewer's choice as and when i get to invite.

Even the review i had stated that some (not all) of the Gmail users that we consulted said that the invites sent to certain hotmail users landed in junk mail folder.
