This is not only in US u can see here in Hyderabad itself

In my team including my manager, all r Hyderabadi and know telugu, except me. So they used to always talk in Telugu and sometimes i feel out of the place. One day in technical discussion they started off in telugu i immediately interrupted them. Now they r fine.

I m not asking them to stop talking in their mother tounge but they have to be professional and in work enviornment they should respect work culture.

Since when is speaking telugu un-professional? Why doesnt the same conditions apply to you? Why not learn telugu, u have learnt englsih and can work overseas, u dont offend the goras by speaking our language and speak their language when amongst them, so why not speak telugu or hindi for that matter when u are amongst telugu speakers or hindi speakers?

my knowledge of telugu is extremely limited

I told u i m not against any language but u r not living in a village and sitting in front of chopal and just passing time, chattering not thinking/caring abt others.U r working in professional environment where u r dealing with other non ur language people also so u should talk which both can understand. I m not saying u to talk only in engilish why u people r not talking in hindi? hindi both telugu and non telugu people can understand. But u see around even though one non telugu guy is sitting they will always talk in telugu why ?

why i should go for telugu ? i know my national and international language ? These people should learn at wht time which language to use . I m not going into there home and telling their relatives to talk inhindi or english. I don't care wht they do in their personal life but in professional life they should understand .

the complaints abt the Telugu s/w professionals is true, but its also true in every state...whereever people of same language congregate, conversation is bound to turn into that language.

using local languages in mixed workplace/group is unprofessional, not even Hindi i must say. Hindi speakers shudn't assume that everybody knows/speaks Hindi in South India...

I noticed this problem working in Delhi too. All the Punjus in office used to carry on cackling in Punjabi-flavored Hindi, making 2 colleagues from Kerala uncomfortable. I was ok since i know the language, so I had to translate certain comments/jokes in English for them.

The problem i mentioned is not about speaking in Telugu (or whatever) in offices. The mother tongue shud not be spoken in a mixed group. period. English is the business language in India, almost all of us were educated in it (atleast in college for some), so please use that.

Even if two Indians carry on a private conversation in mother tongue, they usually do it loudly, accompanied by loud laughter...this is very irritating...

...and non-telugus who grew up in hydbad should know (or atleast understand) telugu ...its really bad to see them comment that they dont know the language.

this type of a situation is bound to happen....people speaking the same language are naturally inclined to speak in that language and form a group....but the organisatins shld mediate and make sure that others dont suffer.....groupism is not good for an organisation and hence people shld try and make as many friends from different places as possible. its all about attitude

No one complains about Chinese nor does anyone complain about Indians for having India's groceries in every town or for eating rice at home everyday or for not going to church. But the problem arises only when they refuse to call themselves American and refuse to attend English schools (like the Hispanic minority does). It is not my intention in anyway to say that this syndrome of ghettoization is unique to Indians. In fact Indians blend in much better than most minorities and kudos to them for that.

Since the "joke" that started off this thread portrayed calling oneself an Indian inspite of being an American citizen as a glorious virtue, I interjected that it is not such a great thing. Peace.

Language is a very delicate matter. IMHO, every situation has a language that suits it best. Someone mentioned that there was a meeting going on and all but one were telugu speakers...and they ended up speaking in telugu. I don't say there's anything unprofessional in speaking telugu, but its basic manners to speak in a language that everyone else around you understands. I hope all will agree.

I also don't understand why it is expected that people who stay here should know telugu. My situation is a case in point. I have travelled all over India....studying, working etc. I learnt the local language wherever I was in contact with it on a regular basis. I learnt gujarati when I was in ahmedabad. I learnt Haryanvi when I was in Faridabad and Karnal. But I didn't learn Kannada when in Bangalore, neither marathi when I was in Mumbai and now that I am here, no telugu either.

This is not out of any disrespect to the language, but its all about circumstances. Imagine this....I speak with my wife and friends in hindi or english, with my collegues in office in english and with my relatives in konkani (my mother tongue). When do I get a chance to speak in telugu and if I don't speak in the language, how do I pick it up? There are hordes of institutes that teach you spoken english. Is there a single institute teaching spoken telugu?

Saying that outsiders should learn telugu by giving the rationale of us learning english "to please goras" (this was outlandish to say the least) is akin to bringing about a shiv-sena culture in hyderabad. We already have a "mumbai is for mumbaikars" to contend with. And you should have been in mumbai during those heady days of shiv-sena ascent. Non-marathis used to live in constant dread. Are we really that regressive?

Do not blame others if the proponents of your language itself are not promoting it with all the vigour required. I opine that we all need to know only our mother tongue (no excuses for escaping that) and hindi (thats the national language). Any other language, including english is upto every individual to learn as and when they feel the need or urge for learning it.

I am all for everybody learning Hindi (and Telugu, and Marathi and....). But just to set the record straight....

But Hindi is NOT the national language. All Indian languages (including Mizo, French (Pondy), Portugese(Goa)) are national langaugeS. Hindi, according to our constitution, is the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of the GOI. There is a subtle difference between Rashtrabasha and Rajbasha

And yes, it is extremely impolite to speak in a different language even if it is a private conversation.

I stand corrected. But the question still remains that should I be forced to learn telugu if I am in hyderabad or for that matter should I be forced to learn bengali if I were in Calcutta?

yup...u r right! :D but before i appear like i am spamming let me continue: lack of telugu knowledge is not an impediment in hyderabad. but in most other parts of the state, as with most parts of south india, local language is necessary...hindi or english wont help much...

No...straight forward no ..there should not be any compulsion. If u feel like than only u learn. Its always better to know local languages but even though if u don't know a single word u can manage at most of the places( Rem MB MBBS Mike testin hello hello!!!)

In Hyderabad most of the people knows hindi, but even in interior places u can manage to get/buy food and drink water without saying a word.
