Male prostitution on the rise: Survey
Sunday, August 17, 2003 (New Delhi): A survey done in Delhi by an NGO called the Delhi AIDS Society has thrown up some surprises. Male prostitution is fast growing.
The survey says prostitutes operate from 400 different places in the national capital and male prostitutes operate from as many as 117 areas, including the prestigious Delhi University.

Experts say easy money has attracted many young men to the world\'s oldest profession. Over the last few years, male prostitutes have also started advertising in newspapers. \"These days almost every area has illegal activities. Girls and boys can meet in a place calling it a beauty parlour,\" said Dipendra Pathak, DCP. The survey says male prostitutes are usually sought after in big parties by women who can afford them. According to the survey, as many as 7,000 men in the capital earn their livelihood by selling their bodies. They work out of colonies including Delhi University, Rohini, Patparganj Industrial Area, Anand Vihar and Punjabi Bagh. \"It\'s true that it\'s growing. The biggest reason is that consumerism is increasing. There is so much want to earn more money among the youth and this is a very easy way to earn money. One night and you get Rs 10,000,\" remarked an expert. While the survey also says that young boys are often picked up from the streets and railway platforms and forced into prostitution, a lot of them enter the profession to earn easy money.
