Is the Value for Engineering Courses decreasing??

by macho » Wed May 01, 2002 12:30 am

I feel the answer for this is a blunt \"yes\". With over 40,000 engineers being produced every year and with software arena becoming saturated the future of engineers looks bleak. Any guy who is into engg. these days is thinking of US right from the day one of engg. But even US is thinking of restricting visas to about 5 lakh as max limit, may be even MS option will close down within a year or two. The Public Sector and Private Sector companies together will require only about 20% of the engineers being produced today. The number of unemployed engineers has been growing linearly all these days but it could grow exponentially from now on. I would only wonder what would be the future of an engineer who graduates in an year or two?? The students while they are still in college never think on these lines and never bother about their future. But to whom the reasons can be attributed to?? Is it the state Government which is relentlessly giving permissions for setting up new engg. colleges? Is it blind craze of public towards engg.??

Well, the true engineers would survive. Engineering is a skill more than a degree, degree is something that enhances those skills. Anyone with engineering skills should survive. We are going to see a deluge of \"unqualified\" engineers in the near future is true.

What Moo said is absolutely true engineering will teach you a systamatic approach towords a problem not that non engineers donot have it and why blame government to blame for giving permission. they are captialising the craze of the public. government is right in their part. now coming to lively hood how long are you going to look for the secured government services. you are sitting in the middle of a crowd which is second largest . the rate at which it is growing I have no doubt in my mind it will be first in the near feature. one has to be entrepreneur in nature. Entrepreneurism is the answer to this problem.

Macho does raise a valid point. But I dont think it is the job of the government to regulate how many engg colleges should be there. The ill-effects of over regulation are there for everyone to see in the medical education arena. There is a screaming shortage of specialists. Yet, only a miniscule % of Medical students can dream of doing post graduate studies. The reason, regulation. Also the education imparted by 99.9% of the institutions in India is substandard. I went to one of the most reputable Engg. colleges in Hyd and perhaps in all of AP. But I dont think I learnt a lot from my profs. The curriculum stresses too much on rote learning. There is no emphasis on problem solving, creative thinking etc. Consequently, the graduates of most engg. colleges emerge with a piece of paper that bears testament to the time they spent in a college, but they do not have much more to show for the time. Things can only improve once the quality of education improves.

too many engg\'s has reduced the value of an engineer , these days anybody can become an engineer , thanks to the private colleges which can give a seat to any damned person and then how can we ignore our great politicians who can give a seat to the dummiest candidate available on this earth. To hell with such a system becoz of which the real talent got buried somewhere.

I am telling you that the time has come that in future all the gent
engineering graduates will become drug addicts because of unemployment. all female engineering graduates will become callgirls for survival which they were already doing in their colleges
