Is ragging an art in the field of education?

by M. Rama krishna » Mon Jun 17, 2002 12:30 am

A: Today, in hyderabad and everywhere in the education institutions, universities and colleges ragging became a fashion. In colleges seniors rag the junior\'s in their special styles. In hyderabad in some colleges, universities seniors ask the juniors to call them as sir\'s and the junior\'s follow them. Who is the sir? One who teaches the knowledge useful for the society is known as the sir. But, what the senior\'s are teaching to the juniors. They are teaching, how to rag, how to criticise the Sir\'s and teacher\'s and how to misbehave with girls, and how to use and throw the girl\'s with the name of love, how to create the campus into a forest of wild animals.

This art is being in practice in the colleges like medical, engineering, law etc., tomorrow the persons who are going to be the builders of our country are indulging in this sought of evil practices means is it the real art of education.

MRK - Ragging is indulging in horse-play, teasing and playing rough jokes. As long as it is done with no intent to harm or hurt, its okie. In a way, it is a good thing. Kinda ice-breaking between freshers and the seniors. Unfortunately, its getting uglier now and so extreme that there have been reports of freshers committing suicide. We did ragging in our times and it was limited to making the juniors sing a song, tell a joke, treating us for a cuppa tea etc. etc. and it never went for more than two days. Like everything else, life in campus is deteriorating too. Its sad but I guess its for the younger generation to do something about. Ham to bhai ab buddhe ho chuke hain!

It seems u r a victim of that and it hurted you very badly. In ragging there was an instance where juniors gave hard time to seniors, coz they were body builders and fought in a group. Sometimes it goes to extreme which is an offense now a days. I think that is right.. Limited ragging is ok as kulcha said.

ragging is an art - those who do not learn it - are just dumb asses. When they become seniors, because they have learnt nothing - they become dumb asses and convert ragging into a plain harassment.
