Have we become aliens in our own country!?

by Greyarmadillo » Tue May 20, 2003 7:00 pm

I have had this disturbing thought for a while now!!! I am belong to a new class of Indians who have had their entire education in English. Now I feel that my education has alienated me from my country and its culture. All my thoughts are in English, although I can speak my native tongue... I have no clue whatsoever of its literature, and its associated culture. Now any educated citizen is supposed to be well versed with his/her country\'s culture... or so I believe. Although I do know a bit, it\'s not enough!!!
Thus although I am a graduate, I still I believe that I am an illiterate!
I wonder how many of you people... feel the way I do??

yep. it was so for me too some time back.. but I could make up my mind at the right time and I started learning my language along with several other Indian languages. I can read and write. I also read literature in these languages now. I find me, my family, my childhood and all of us in our literature and it IS nostalgic. There are times when I read it out to myself and enjoy the words and the formation of the sentences. The way they sound, it\'s Sweet and Rich. You also should try it out, G. It is worth all the effort that you may be putting in it now. If I could get a teacher here, in California, to teach me understand some more of my language, I would love to learn. I am looking out for one, actually! Not enough luck. though, just began Hindustani and Carnatic. Want to decide which one suits my tone/accent/languages known better :). You just go ahead and learn what all you want to and enjoy. Others may see what you are enjoying and do it! Right?

last week i asked my colleague to give me the dos, donts and symptoms list of SARS, she printed one in Hindi and said, ur language !! i cant read Hindi, cant read telugu, can write and speak though, whoz the culprit ? dont know. One observation: language skills of males is bad compared to females. My sis is excellent in all three languages. and if my spouse doesnt know telugu, who will do the Pooja during festivals !! buy a cassette ? no way.

Don\'t think Hindustani and Carnatic qualify as languages. Do you mean Hindi and Kannada ?

No, its the classical music: hindustani is generally used in the north and carnatic in the southern parts of india, I think. Did i come to the right conclusion? I meant classical music is also available to indulge in, apart from some of the indian languages when we want to feel that Indian or Indiannny... Indianish..

POPO you need those classes more than Arch! Hindustani and Carnatic!!! It is truly shameful that we have to learn about our culture, background and tradition after coming to this age! But still...its never too late...and once you know you have to you SHOULD! All the best everyone!
